Laura Halleman is a writer and photographer who has 13 years experience writing for weekly and daily newspapers, with a focus on news, human interest and feature writing.

Her journalism career began as a freelance writer for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and most recently has involved disaster freelance reporting which she became involved in immediately following Hurricane Katrina, which struck the Gulf Coast states in 2005. After Hurricane Katrina, Laura spent the majority of 2006 freelancing for the Sun-Herald, of Biloxi, Mississippi, and lived out of an Army tent, splitting her time between writing articles on the recovery efforts and as a volunteer coordinator. She worked alongside other volunteers, teaching them to gut homes, roof, drywall, & most importantly, lending an ear to distressed residents.

Her reporting also included writing for Disaster News Network during other natural disasters. She has also been published in Pittsburgh magazine and is included in the bookRising From Katrina: How My Mississippi Hometown Lost It All and Found What Mattered,  by former CNN reporter Kathleen Koch.

Laura is the mother of two grown children and currently resides in Hopewell Township with her husband and two dogs, Oliver and Zoe. Her interests include family, politics, reading, writing, gardening and trying to remember to work out.
