Nutcracker Tradition Contest—We Have a Winner!

This photo earned the Morris family two tickets to the classic ballet.

We have a winner of Patch's "Nutcracker Tradition" photo contest. This picture of 4-year-old Natalie with her nutcracker has earned her family two tickets to the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre's always-in-demand production of the classic story of Marie and her Nutcracker Prince. During her recovery, Natalie has been watching the Nutcracker Ballet on YouTube—and even saw a few local kids peform the dance while she still was in the hospital. "I would love to take her to the Nutcracker after Christmas since she missed out on so many Christmas activities this year," Morris wrote. Recognized as one of the most popular ballets of all time, "The Nutcracker" is a …

Reality TV Ballerina From Pittsburgh Talks 'Breaking Pointe'

Allison DeBona stars in the CW's summer series, elevating ballet's return to mainstream pop culture.

Ballet is having a moment. A moment that ballerina Allison DeBona hopes is here to stay. DeBona, a Pittsburgh native, stars in the CW Network’s “Breaking Pointe,” a reality series centered on behind-the-curtain workings of Ballet West, an elite company in Salt Lake City.  The camera captures ballet’s gritty realism and its beauty under the hot lights, as well as the characters' quest for perfection, competitiveness and intensity of rehearsal—a true labor of love. DeBona grew up in New Castle and at 12 years old moved to the Steel City with her family. She began to train at Pittsburgh Youth Ballet Company & School, located in Peters Township, under the instruction of owner Jean Gedeon—a notable name in the industry. The dancer took some …

Cranberry Patch received close to a dozen adorable entrants in the photo submission contest

We have a winner! The photo Summer Fowler submitted of her daughter, Veronica, holding a Hearts for Hearts doll was selected in a random drawing to win two tickets to see the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre's performance of Coppelia this weekend. The tickets were the prize in Cranberry Patch’s "Your Favorite Toy" photo contest, which received close to a dozen adorable entrants of children with their best-loved toy. Fowler said Rahel, the doll Veronica is holding in the photo, was a present from Victoria’s grandparents for her third birthday. Because Rahel is a Hearts for Hearts doll, which are based on real little girls from around the world, a portion of the proceeds from the doll’s sale goes to Rahel’s home country of Ethiopia.
