Daughter Details Escape from Evans City House Fire

The blaze heavily damaged the rental home on May Lane.

Evans City resident Stacy Norris was sound asleep when her mother woke her just after midnight Wednesday to tell her the house was on fire. At first, she didn’t believe her—then she saw the flames. Norris, a nurse at UPMC in Cranberry who rents the house on May Lane with her mother, quickly grabbed the family dog and hurried outside. Norris said she tried to return to the house to try to grab some personal items, but by then the flames already were too fierce.  "We couldn't get back in," she said. The white, two-story home was heavily damaged in the blaze and is uninhabitable. Norris said she and her mother would be staying with an aunt in the area until other arrangements are made. Although she believes many items inside the house aren't …

Fire Destroys Cottage on Connoquenessing Creek

Owner was a work while fire spread through the home.

Fire destroyed a cottage on the banks of the Connoquenessing Creek in Forward Township Tuesday. Evans City Area Fire Capt. Brian Greenawalt said firefighters were called to the home on Horseshoe Lane off Route 528 at about 9:45 a.m. When firefighters arrived in the area, flames already were shooting through the roof of the one-story building, he said. Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to a pickup truck parked in the driveway of the cottage. Greenawalt said the cause of the fire is still undetermined, but does not appear to be suspicious. The blaze is believed to have started in the corner of a back room on the first floor of the home, he said. A neighbor said Kraig Martin, who was at work when the fire broke out, …

Community Rallies, Continues to Collect Donations For Evans City Family Who Lost Everything in Fire

After the successful collection of donations Sunday for the Pearce family at the Evans City fire hall, a new website has been set up to raise money for the family.

Of all the people who stopped by the Evans City fire hall Sunday to drop off monetary donations, gift cards and other items for the Pearce family, whose home was destroyed by fire Friday, the one that stands out most in firefighter Brett Wagner’s head is a little boy who walked in and handed over a wad of crumpled dollar bills. “He walked in, came up steps, handed us a roll of money and said ‘I’d like to give this to the family,’” Wagner said. The youngster departed the station shortly after arriving, but Wagner said the boy’s kindness was emblematic of the day. “The support we had down there was amazing,” he said. Evans City firefighters on Sunday welcomed the public to drop off items for Drew Pearce, his wife, Cindy, and children, …

Evans City Firefighters Collecting Donations for Family Who Lost Everything in Blaze

A fire destroyed the Pearce family’s mobile home in Evans City Friday.

The Evans City Area Volunteer Fire Department is collecting donations for the Pearce family, whose mobile home was destroyed in a fire Friday. Firefighter Brett Wagner suggested donating clothes, gift cards and other items to the family, who lost everything in the blaze. He asked people to hold off on dropping off larger items such as furniture until the family, including Drew Pearce, his wife, Cindy, and children, Brandon, 10, and Casey, 3, are settled into a new residence. “We’re trying to keep it light since they don’t have a place to stay,” he said. Wagner said donations may be dropped off from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the fire hall on North Jackson Street. The Pearce family will arrived at the station around 4:30 p.m. that day to pick up…

Mail Carrier Saves Dog as Fire Destroys Evans City Mobile Home

The homeowner and her toddler daughter left their home for a doctor’s appointment just minutes before fire consumed it.

Postal worker Jo Amerson was on her normal mail route through the Iffts Trailer Court in Evans City Friday when she noticed smoke coming from the Pearce residence on Pioneer Street. Fearing the family was inside because she saw their car was parked at the home, Amerson and neighbor Ashley Kennedy began banging on the mobile home’s door. When no one answered, Amerson and Kennedy started smashing the trailer’s windows. Amerson said she managed to open the back door to the home and saw the family dog, Diesel, unconscious. After dragging him outside, Amerson said she performed CPR on the shepherd-lab mix. “He’s fine now,” she said. No one else was inside the home as it burned. Drew Pearce said his wife, Cindy, and 3-year-daughter, Casey, left …
