Troopers from the Pennsylvania State Police, Ohio Highway Patrol and West Virginia State Police held a press conference Friday morning so travelers know officers will be putting up a combined effort to target intoxicated drivers. Twelve people were charged with DUI over the weekend as police from the North Hills were out en force to conduct sobriety checkpoints and roving patrols, according to North Hills DUI Task Force coordinator Scott J. Rick. Four were arrested at Saturday's sobriety checkpoint in West Deer Township along Route 910. Of the 355 vehicles that passed through the checkpoint, three people were arrested for possession of a controlled substance and one for drug paraphernalia possession, Rick said in a press release. Five citations were issued for vehicle-code violations. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced the distribution of federal funds to help municipal and state police crack down on impaired driving through Labor Day during the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” initiative. “People may have end-of-summer plans that involve alcohol, but safety should be at the forefront of everyone’s mind,” said PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch. “Getting behind the wheel when you’re impaired by drugs or alcohol puts your life in danger as well as the lives of everyone sharing the road with you," he said.
