Election Guide 2012: Rep. Daryl Metcalfe Running Unopposed for 12th District

The Republican legislator is seeking his eighth term in Pennsylvania's House of Representatives.

State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-Cranberry, is expected to sail into his eighth term representing the 12th District in the state House of Representatives in Tuesday's election. The incumbent is running unopposed on the Republican ballot. After launching a last-minute write-in campaign to take on Metcalfe, Steve Smith, principal of Haine Middle School in the Seneca Valley School District, pulled out of the race after the April primary election. First elected in 1998, Metcalfe is the Republican majority chair on the House State Government committee, which—among other things—is responsible for legislative redistricting, lobbyist disclosure and campaign financing. He is an advocate of protecting taxpayers, reforming education, ending immigration …

Allegheny County Elections Board Votes To Challenge Voter ID Law

The vote to sue was strictly along party lines.

By a 2-1 vote, Allegheny County’s election board has decided to file a lawsuit challenging Pennsylvania’s new Voter Identification law.  The two Democrats, board chairman John DeFazio and county Executive Rich Fitzgerald, voted to sue, while Republican Heather Heidelbaugh voted against the measure.  The results of the vote were hardly surprising.  Friday, Fitzgerald and several other key county Democrats announced their intention to challenge the law.  Sponsored by Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-Cranberry, the law requires voters to show photo identification before they vote at the polls. After a dry run in the April primary, it is scheduled to take effect for the Nov. 6 general election.  “I’ve made no secret of the fact that I am absolutely …

Allegheny County Officials Challenge State Voter ID Law

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald will hold a press conference at 2 p.m. today on efforts to block the law.

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and county controller Chelsa Wagner are among the officials planning a challenge to the Voter ID law, which was signed by Gov. Tom Corbett in March. Sponsored by Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-Cranberry, the law requires voters to show photo identification before they vote at the polls. After a dry run in the April primary, it is scheduled to take effect for the Nov. 6 general election. Allegheny County Board of Elections Chair John DeFazio scheduled a special meeting of the Board of Elections for 3 p.m. Tuesday to consider a call by Fitzgerald for the board to authorize a legal challenge to Act 18, the Voter ID Law. The meeting at the Allegheny County Courthouse will include a vote to authorize a lawsuit…

We also pay for Corbett's salary and expenses, he signed the damn thing and the sweethearts in our fine legislature who passed it. Keep that in mind at the next elections, if the GOP allows you to vote.   more ›

Seneca Valley Principal Stages Write-in Campaign, Will Take on Metcalfe in Primary

Steve Smith is running for the state House of Representatives

Veteran Seneca Valley educator Steve Smith, principal at Haine Middle School, is staging a write-in campaign to take on incumbent state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-Cranberry, in the April 24 primary election. Smith launched a Facebook page a few days ago to announce his candidacy for the state House of Representatives. To be on the ballot in the November general election, Smith will need more than 300 votes in the spring primary. “Over the years, I have been honored to have your support as a friend, a colleague, a neighbor, or in some other way,” he wrote on the site. “Today, I turn to you once again for your support as I embark upon a new endeavor: running for State Representative in Pennsylvania’s 12th District.” Smith said his campaign will …

State House Passes Voter ID Bill

The governor is expected to sign the measure, which Rep. Daryl Metcalfe sponsored.

The state House of Representatives has given the green light to legislation that Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-Cranberry, sponsored, which will require voters to show photo identification before they vote at the polls. The measure will next hit the desk of Gov. Tom Corbett, who has indicated he plans to sign the bill into law, the Patriot-News reports. “Pennsylvania is now one signature away from implementing a proven, fraud-preventing mechanism to ensure that voters are who they claim to be when exercising their inalienable right to privately cast their vote,” Metcalfe said in a statement. “Authenticating one citizen-one vote ownership by requiring the display of valid photo ID at the polling place is essential to replacing the centuries-old …

It makes it seem like the ACLU and other groups that oppose voter ID laws are planning to try to sway elections by casting illegal votes. In some areas you can"t even visit the school without showing your ID (but ironically you can pick up a child without showing ID, sigh, so much for common sense). And we had to produce a birth certificate to register our kid for kindergarten. Oh the horrors.   more ›

Rep. Metcalfe: Corbett Budget is About a 'Billion Short in Welfare Spending Cuts'

Plus, Seneca Valley reacts to the governor's plan for state education funding.

State Rep Daryl Metcalfe, R-Cranberry, is calling the 2012-13 state budget that Gov. Tom Corbett unveiled today about “$1 billion short in overdue welfare spending cuts.” “The governor needs to exchange his butter knife for a meat cleaver and cut even more wasteful and excessive welfare spending,” Metcalfe said in a statement regarding the budget. The $27.14 billion budget, which features .1 percent less spending than this year, holds the line on overall state spending and taxes but cuts funding for social services and state-connected universities. State funding for community colleges and publics schools will remain at about the same levels as this year. The Patriot–News, however, reports state-related universities such as Penn State, …
