The Cranberry-Township company wants to accelerate the deployment of on its small modular reactor technology.
Westinghouse Electric Co. has submitted a letter of intent responding to the recent funding opportunity with the U.S. Department of Energy. The Cranberry-Township based company announced earlier this week plans to compete for a second round of funding to accelerate the deployment of small modular reactor technology. According to the Pittsburgh Business Times, Westinghouse lost out on the first round of funding. The funding would go toward the Westinghouse SMR, a 225-MWe integral pressurized water reactor with all primary components located inside of the reactor vessel. It is the company's next product innovation already licensed in the nuclear industry-leading AP1000 nuclear power plant design. Westinghouse is working collaboratively with…

The contract is to provide engineering, specialty pipe cutting and welding services to replace a steam generator at a nuclear power plant.
Cranberry Township-based Westinghouse Electric Co. has been awarded its first large contract in Argentina. The contract signed with Nucleoeléctrica Argentina S.A. (NA-SA) will provide engineering, specialty pipe cutting and welding services to replace a steam generator at Argentina’s Embalse Nuclear Power Plant, according to an announcement Thursday. Westinghouse said the work through its subsidiary, PCI Energy Services, LLC, is part of an overall refurbishment program to extend the power plant’s life up to an additional 30 years. Although the engineering scope of work is underway, major site activities are expected to be executed during 2014. Westinghouse supplied the world's first pressurized water reactor in 1957 in Shippingport and is …

The Cranberry Township-based corporation achieved the notable milestone on Friday.
Cranberry-based Westinghouse Electric Co. has announced the successful setting of its AP1000 containment vessel top head in China. The placement of the containment vessel top head for the nuclear island of Unit 1 at the Haiyang site was completed on Friday, March 29, according to a news release. The CVTH weighs approximately 659 tons and was manufactured by Shandong Nuclear Power Equipment Manufacturing Company Ltd. in China’s Shandong province. The setting is a significant step this year in Westinghouse’s delivery of China’s four AP1000 nuclear power plant units. Westinghouse and CB&I signed landmark contracts with Chinese customers in 2007 to provide four AP1000 pressurized water reactors in China: two in Sanmen in Zhejiang province, and…

Spokesman Vaughn Gilbert said the layoffs would not be targeted to one location, including the Westinghouse headquarters in Cranberry.
Blaming a global economic downturn and less demand for nuclear products, Westinghouse Electric Company is whittling its workforce for the second time in less than a year. Westinghouse spokesman Vaughn Gilbert said the company on Tuesday informed employees that it would eliminate 665 positions worldwide. The number constitutes about 5 percent of the company’s workforce of about 13,300 employees in 17 countries, Gilbert said. He noted the eliminations include open positions that have not been filled. Gilbert did not know how the layoffs would affect employees at the Westinghouse headquarters in Cranberry. He expected the eliminations to impact all operations across the globe. “At this point, we are working through the details,” he said. “It …

With the Westinghouse headquarters now located in Cranberry, the company's former site at the Forest Hills/Chalfant border has been sold to a developer. The atom smasher sitting on the property now needs a new use—or a new home.
The iconic blue "W" within a circle that was the Westinghouse logo is a bit faded. The odd, pear-shaped metal structure a bit weathered. And its future uncertain at best. It was on the hill above Ardmore Boulevard, nestled between Chalfant and the "lettered" avenues plan in Forest Hills, where the world's first industrial Van de Graaff atom smasher made history in 1937—and Westinghouse Electric and the nation became a dominant force in nuclear energy. The Forest Hills landmark, which smashed its last atom in 1958, is one of 50 historical "milestones" listed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. In 2000, the atom smasher was designated historically significant by the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation. That …
