Cranberry, Western PA Catholic Leaders React, Express Surprise at Pope's Resignation

Cardinal Donald Wuerl, formerly the bishop of Pittsburgh, will vote for the next pope.

Cardinal Donald Wuerl said he was so surprised to hear Pope Benedict XVI was resigning that he called Rome to confirm it.  That is what the former bishop of the Pittsburgh Diocese told NewsRadio 1020 KDKA this morning. Wuerl, now the archbishop of Washington, D.C., will be one of 120 cardinals to elect a successor to Pope Benedict XVI at a March conclave. He said the announcement that the pope is resigning, effective Feb. 28, came as "very surprising news", according to KDKA. Bishop David Zubik, the current leader of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that he noticed the pope looking frail when Zubik visited Rome in October. Zubik, who was assigned to Pittsburgh by Pope Benedict, said he is saddened by the news but…

Good Friday and Passover Coincide: Where to Worship

Here's some of the services around the community this weekend.

Today is Good Friday, the most solemn day of the Christian calendar, which commemorates the death of Jesus Christ on the Cross and his resurrection. When the sun sets tonight, it also will mark the first day of Passover, the eight-day holiday in which Jews commemorate their freedom from slavery and their passage out of Egypt. American Jews typically celebrate the “passing over” with a Seder dinner held at the home that involves story, song and conversation about the exodus from Egypt. The evening also features ritual drinking of wine and eating Matzo, a flat unleavened bread. While there are no temples in the Cranberry area, the Cranberry Jewish Community regularly holds meetings and culturally-based activities, including a Purim party …

And the Winner of the Fish Fry Poll is…

It was a tough choice between St. Kilian and St. Gregory.

After a lot of voting—and some great comments—we’d like to congratulate St. Kilian Parish for being named the winner of this week’s Readers’ Choice poll. We’re also giving St. Gregory Catholic Church in Zelienople special recognition because of the numerous positive comments the church received for its popular fish fry. A total 600 people voted in the poll. Of that, St. Kilian’s received 318 votes. St. Ferdinand Catholic Church received 134 votes and St. Gregory followed close behind with 125 votes. The St. Kilian Fish Fry is offered from 4 to 8 p.m. every …
