Just what is Small Business Saturday and why should you support it in the Cranberry area?
Big name national retailers take the spotlight on Black Friday as their deep price cuts pull in shoppers in droves. What about those mom-and-pop businesses all over Cranberry, Harmony, Zelienople, Evans City and beyond that are the backbone of America’s economy? Just when do they get their day? That’s basically the question that was asked back in 2010 when the concept of Small Business Saturday was born. Small Business Saturday is “a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities,” the U.S. Small Business Administration explains on its website. American Express gets the credit for founding the shopping holiday, which got its official start on Nov. 27, 2010, according to the Small Business Saturday …

Located in the Village at Pine along Route 19 in Wexford, the two-year-old store has clothes—from baby sizes to adults—as well as framed photos, team gnomes, bobble heads and more. Owner Jeff Schlichtkrull said sweatshirts are a big seller and he's expanded his store's selection to include Pittsburgh items like cups, snow globes and a pen with an Incline floating in it. You can find jackets, T-shirts, Troy Polamalu Bobble Heads, wine glasses, bibs, a little-girl Steeler cheerleader outfit, Steeler salt-and-pepper shakers, a Steeler birdhouse and caps. Schlichtkrull will celebrate Small Business Saturday by giving customers a 10 percent discount on …

Another new restaurant is in the works for Cranberry Township. Shopping at locally owned stores helps boost the local economy.
Small Business Saturday—a day to support small businesses in the community—falls on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving and one day after Black Friday. American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season. Shopping on Small Business Saturday is the perfect way to give back to the businesses you know and love in the Cranberry area community. Last year, 100 million people nationwide participated in Small Business Saturday by shopping at locally owned stores to help boost the economy in their communities. Cranberry Patch wants to get the word out on what local businesses are doing on Small Business Saturday by offering this space as a free forum to let the community know what is …

The indoor kennel and doggie daycare also will host two open houses in December.
Folks heading away for the holidays now have new boarding option for their pooches. After months of construction, 5th Avenue Fido, a luxury doggie day care center and indoor kennel, opens Monday off Route 19 in Cranberry. Located in the former Northgate Honda building, the facility offers what owner Linda Beard calls “guilt-free” boarding. 5th Avenue Fido also will offer dog training, including puppy, basic and socialization classes. Dog owners may drop off their pups before they head to work at the facility’s doggie day care. There also will be dog-grooming services at the building. Inside, the kennel features separate dog “houses,” complete with siding and roofs, in the building’s “Residential” and “Fifth Avenue” sections. Beard, of …

Proceeds benefit Rosie Hope, a nonprofit founded by a 11-year-old Seneca Valley student.
When Kandy Barkley opened her Eye Kandy Boutique in the Center of Harmony on Mercer Street in Harmony over the summer, one of her goals was to provide fashion for women of all shapes and sizes. And that’s exactly the type of women who will be featured Saturday in her first ever fashion show. “I wanted to represent my customer, who is the everyday woman,” she said. Indeed, some of the women walking in the show, which takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 17 in the upstairs community room at The Center of Harmony, are Eye Kandy customers and other friends from the area. All proceeds from the event benefit Rosie Hope, a charity founded by 11-year-old Charlee Dawson, of Jackson Township. A fifth-grader at Evans City Elementary, Charlee, the …

Attracting more than 5,000 people to the area, the WeihnachtsMarkt is based on the open-air Christmas market in Germany.
Thanks in part to the weekend’s unusually warm and sunny weather (and no Steelers game) the annual WeihnachtsMarkt in Harmony attracted its largest crowd yet to the heart of the town’s historic district. “They already come out for it even when the weather has been inclement, but not in this number,” said event chairwoman Gwen Lutz. “We’ve had a wonderful attendance and a really, really nice crowd.” Now in its 22nd year, the WeihnachtsMarkt is based on the open-air Christmas market held in Germany and features a variety of German foods, crafts, activities for kids, antiques, horse-drawn wagon rides, German dancers and much more. The event typically attracts about 5,000 people from around the region. This year, Lutz said 3,200 people had …

Glad to hear this. If it's authentic I'd love to try it. I like Patrons. I don't like South of the Border. My family has been wanting a good Mexican restaurant that is a little closer.   more ›
