Elections 2012: Kelly, Metcalfe Win at the Polls

Running unopposed, State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-Cranberry, has an easy victory Tuesday. Incumbent U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly defeats Democratic contender Missa Eaton by a wide margin in the 3rd Congressional District.

The results are in. As expected, State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-Cranberry, sailed to an easy victory Tuesday to represent the 12th District in the state House of Representatives. The incumbent, who will enter his eighth term, ran unopposed on the Republican ballot. The 12th District covers Cranberry, Adams, Clinton, Forward, Jefferson, Middlesex and Penn townships and the boroughs of Callery, Connoquenessing, Evans City, Mars, Saxonburg, Seven Fields and Valencia. Incumbent U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Butler, easily defeated Democratic contender Missa Eaton and Steven Porter, an unaffiliated Independent candidate, for Pennsylvania’s Third Congressional District Tuesday, according to unofficial results. Patch Poll: What Do You Think of Proposed Ban on Texting While Driving?

The state House of Representatives passes a bill to make texting while driving a primary offense.

Ever answer a text while you’re stopped in the car at a red light? Or worse, type out a reply while you’re driving? It the near future, that may be a finable offense. In a 188-7 vote, the state House of Representatives on Monday overwhelmingly approved SB314, which would ban texting while driving for people of all ages. The bill also makes texting while driving a primary offense, meaning police are permitted to pull over motorists for violations. The bill now is making its way back to the Senate, which originally passed a version of the bill that made it a lesser offense. Anyone who opposes this ban need only read the article currently at this site titled "Police: Saxonburg Teen was Texting before Fatal Car Crash." A beautiful life, lost. As with seat belt and drunk driving laws, we should continue to work to eliminate all unnecessary risks to driving.   more ›

Arizona Shooting Won't Keep Local Legislators From Public Meetings

After a shooting rampage that critically injured Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and killed six others, local legislators sound off on security for public events.

On a snowy day during his first year as a member of the state House of Representatives, Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-Cranberry, was in his office when a man who was upset about icy road conditions called and threatened to kill everyone in the legislative office unless the streets were cleared by a certain time The man was not identified and did not carry out his threat, but Metcalfe, now is serving his sixth term in office, said he was shocked by the attempt at intimidation.
