New Faces Running for Seneca Valley School Board in Primary Election

Veterans Jason Wehrle and Eric Gordon will not run in 2013.

A handful of new faces will be running for Seneca Valley’s school board in the May primary election. Frederick V. Peterson, Jr., of Cranberry, has cross-filed to run on the Democratic and Republican ticket for the Cranberry Township West IV and West VI, Region 4 area currently represented by school board member Jason Wehrle. Wehrle, a lawyer from Cranberry whose first term expires this year, has chosen not to run for the board in 2013. Two Cranberry residents, Timothy Hester and Judi Rexford, also are vying for the Cranberry Township East III and West V, Region 5 seat that will be vacated by Eric Gordon. Gordon, who is finishing up his first four-year term on the school board, announced in January that he would run on the Republican ticket…

Hill Reappointed as School Board President, Gordon Vice President

Seneca Valley's reorganization meeting was held Monday.

At Monday’s reorganization meeting, Bob Hill was reappointed as president of the Seneca Valley school board in a 5-4 vote over Eric DiTullio. After winning re-election in the November general election, Hill begins his fourth term on the board in 2012. Eric Gordon, who is serving his first four-year term after joining the board in 2009, was appointed vice president in a 5-4 vote, also over DiTullio. Gordon replaces Jason Wehrle. The board also welcomed new members Kelly Kopera, who in November defeated incumbent Joe Scalmogna for the Region 7 seat representing Seven Fields and Evans City, and Jim Nickel, whose Region 2 seat represents Cranberry. Nickel replaces Anthony Storti, who chose not to seek re-election after serving eight years on …

Storti, Scalamogna Say Good-bye to Seneca Valley School Board

Monday's meeting is the last for the district officials.

After eight years of helping to lead the school district, Seneca Valley school board member Anthony Storti attended his last meeting on Monday. “I’m a little sad,” he said. “I enjoyed working here in the last eight years.” After making a promise to himself and his family to limit himself to two terms on the board, Storti chose not to seek re-election this year. His seat in Region Two representing Cranberry Township will be taken over in 2012 by newcomer Jim Nickel, who ran a successful campaign in both the primary and general elections. Storti spoke of the accomplishments the district made while he was on board, saying he is particularly proud of its leap from 48 to 16 in the Pittsburgh Business Times annual ranking of Western Pennsylvania…

Seneca Valley Official Questions Timing, Asks to Rescind 2011-12 Budget

School board member Joseph Scalamogna says a final budget vote in May was too early.

Although Seneca Valley officials last month approved the budget for the 2011-12 school year, the $94.5 million spending plan still is very much on the mind of school board member Joseph Scalamogna. At Monday’s meeting, he tried but failed to persuade school board members to rescind their vote May 16 to approve the final budget. It addressed the $10 million deficit the district faces in the next school year by adding a 5.6-mill increase in real estate taxes and curtailing a half-dozen district programs. He also questioned the timing of Dr. Sally Hanley’s resignation shortly after the budget’s approval and asked why a vote to adopt the spending plan took place in May when the district has until June 30 to agree on a budget. “There was no …

Seneca Valley Loses, Replaces Board Member in One Night

School officials appoint Reid Moon to the seat representing Zelienople after Dr. Sally A. Hanley resigns.

In a quick turnaround, Seneca Valley School Board members lost one official and appointed her replacement in one evening. At Monday’s workshop meeting, board members accepted the resignation of Dr. Sally A. Hanley, whose Region 6 seat represents Zelienople. Hanley did not attend Monday’s meeting, but school board President Robert Hill read aloud the letter of resignation she sent to district officials on May 23. The resignation is effective immediately. In her letter, Hanley, whose first term on the board would have ended in December, thanked officials for the time she spent in service to the district. “It is my hope that Seneca Valley continues to thrive,” she wrote in her letter. Linda Andreassi, the district’s director of communications…

2011 Results: Seneca Valley School Board

Newcomers Kelly Kopera and Jim Nickel move on to the general election.

The results of Tuesday's primary election virtually assure several Seneca Valley School Board candidates a win in the general election. Cranberry Township resident Jim Nickel was elected on both the Republicn and Democratic ballots after cross-filing for the Region 2 area representing Cranberry Township. This means he will appear as a candidate on both the Democratic and Republican tickets in the fall. Nickel defeated candidate Vernon "Chip" Sargent II, who also cross-filed to run on both ballots. Kelly Kopera, a benefits consultant from Evans City, also cross-filed to run and was elected on both party tickets. She defeated incumbent board member Joseph A. Scalamogna for the Region 7 seat representing Evans City and Seven Fields.  …
