The library is collecting new and gently-used books throughout January.
After learning of Slippery Rock University Professor Alice Del Vecchio’s efforts to honor the children and teachers who died at Sandy Hook Elementary School Dec. 14 with the "We Can Read!" book drive, Leslie Pallotta knew it was the perfect project for the Cranberry Public Library, and its patrons, to participate in. “We sort of have an embarrassment of riches with people donating to us,” Pallotta, the library’s director, said. “This is just a way for us to share with others.” Throughout January, donations of new and gently-used children's books may be dropped off in one of the “Cranberry Cares” bins located inside the Cranberry Township Municipal Center on Rochester Road. By Valentine's Day, the books will be distributed to children in …

Mars Area Superintendent Dr. William Pettigrew said the district is investigating a report that a stranger was walking on the grounds at Mars Area Primary Center along Route 228 in Adams Township Tuesday morning. In letter sent to parents later that day, Pettigrew said administrators have contacted Adams Township Police about the incident. “Mars Area School District strives to remain proactive in the protection of its students and employees,” Pettigrew wrote. “The district will keep you informed of any additional information regarding this incident, as it becomes available.” As of Wednesday, Adams police still are investigating the incident. In wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary mass shooting, Dick's Sporting Goods also has removed all guns from the store closest to Newtown, CT.
In wake of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, two major retailers are pulling the plug on sales of certain semi-automatic weapons nationwide. Dick’s Sporting Goods, one of the largest sporting goods retailers in the world, has suspended sales of some semi-automatic rifles from all stores. The company, which is headquartered in Moon Township, also has removed all guns from its chain closest to Newtown, CT. In a statement, the store said it ordered the move out of respect for the victims and families of Newtown. Friday’s shooting left 20 children, all between the ages of 6 and 7, and six adults dead. “We are extremely saddened by the unspeakable tragedy that occurred last week in Newtown, CT, and our hearts go out to the victims …

All of the 20 children killed Friday were age 6 or 7.
Within hours of Friday’s mass shooting in Newton, Conn., that left 27 people, including 20 children at Sandy Hook Elementary, dead, gun-control debates began raging across the country. The shooter, identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, was armed with an assault rifle and two semiautomatic pistols, according to Connecticut State Police Lt. Paul Vance. All of the weapons were registered to and legally owned by his mother, Nancy Lanza, who was found dead of multiple gunshot wounds at her home. In the days since the shootings, some Democrats in Congress have been pushing for more gun restrictions in the United States, including a ban on military-style assault weapons. While President Barack Obama has not specifically mentioned gun control in …
Dr. Tracy Vitale says the threat isn't credible. She also addresses Seneca Valley's own security measures in wake of the shooting at the Connecticut elementary school.
Seneca Valley Superintendent Dr. Tracy Vitale reached out to parents Sunday with a letter that addressed rumors of a shooting being planned at the senior high school. She also reflected on Friday’s tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., and detailed the district’s own security measures. On Friday, Jackson Township Police Chief Terry Seilhamer told Cranberry Patch officers were investigating a rumor that a student was planning a shooting at Seneca Valley High School. Characterizing the information vague and “third hand,” the chief said police were following up on the issue. In her letter to parents, Vitale said there would “a heightened awareness” at Seneca Valley and with local law enforcement in the coming days based on …
