Students remained in school.

Seneca Valley’s building and grounds department worked with Cranberry crews to repair a water main break at Rowan Elementary School Monday morning.   Students remained in school as scheduled during the break. In a statement, the district informed parents there was no need to pick up their children or remove them early from school. “We wanted to use this opportunity to reassure you that lunch is being served, extra drinking water is being made available and a water buffalo is being provided to address any sanitary needs,” the statement said. Seneca Valley also sent an alert about the water main break to Rowan elementary parents and guardians Monday via its notification system. Watch It: Seneca Valley Students Make Videos for ‘Recycle Bowl’

Rowan and Haine students wage a friendly battle to recycle the most items at their schools. Check out their promotional videos on Patch.

Sure, the Super Bowl doesn’t take place until Sunday, but Seneca Valley students have already declared a winner—and it’s the environment. Students at Haine Middle School and Rowan Elementary reccently took part in the 2012 Keep America Beautiful Recycle Bowl. They also engaged in a little friendly competition with each other when it came to which school could recycle the most items. At Haine, teacher Allison Stebbins said her fifth and sixth grade purpose students would give up their study hall once a week to go through garbage bins in various classrooms and pull out the recyclable materials. Throughout the four-week contest, which took place in October and November, the Haine students recycled more than 3,200 pounds of materials, Stebbins…

Longtime Principal Giancola Saying Goodbye to Rowan Elementary

The administrator has accepted a job with the Allegheny Intermediate Unit.

Ask Dr. John Giancola to describe Rowan Elementary and he’ll tell you what he’s forever telling his staff and students, that it’s the greatest school on the planet. And he’s confident that it will remain that way—even though he’s leaving it. “It’s bittersweet,” he said. “I loved my time here.” Giancola, who has been principal at the school since 2006, has accepted a position as an English as a Second Language supervisor at the Allegheny Intermediate Unit. His last day with the Seneca Valley School District is Dec. 3. Although emotional about leaving Rowan (he describes the staff and parents as “family”), Giancola said the new position allows him to return to one of his first loves—teaching literacy. “Reading is my biggest love,” he said. “…

I live on the corner of Franklin & Peters and both of those roads are treated like race tracks by drivers. The notorious ones are the cement truck drivers coming from the place on Marshall Rd. On a regular basis I see those drivers exceeding the speed limit, running the red light at Franklin/Peters, and the stop sign at Peters/Myoma.   more ›

Photos: Welcome Back, Seneca Valley Students!

Cranberry Patch captures the kids as they arrive for the first day of school. Plus, upload photos of your students here.

Forget opening presents on Christmas Day, for Rowan Elementary principal Dr. John Giancola, nothing beats late August. “This is the most exciting time of the year, the first day of school,” he said. Giancola was at the front doors of the school as buses arrived Tuesday morning to welcome back new and returning students with high fives and handshakes. Unlike last year, he and the staff weren’t wearing aprons. That look was part of the theme for the 2011-12 school year, “Recipe for Success.” This year’s theme is “Lights, Camera, Action.” “It’s a Hollywood atmosphere here,” Giancola joked. Over at Haine Elementary and Middle School, assistant principal Mandy Toy was feeling first day of school jitters. That’s because this is the first year …
