Gov. Corbett Cuts Ribbon to Celebrate Wexford Flats Improvement Project on Route 19

Rep. Mike Turzai, township officials from Pine and McCandless, PennDOT officials and more join governor for ceremony.

With busy Route 19 as the backdrop, Gov. Tom Corbett joined with a host of officials Monday to cut a ribbon to celebrate the expansion and improvements to the Wexford Flats section of the road in Pine and McCandless. At the ceremony in Wexford Plaza, Corbett used the opportunity to talk about transportation's role in the regrowth of southwestern Pennsylvania. "Southwestern Pennsylvania is at a critical juncture in its economic history," the governor said. "We are sitting in the middle of the largest economic boom in more than 150 years. We hope to become the location of the first ethane processing plant ever built in the northeast United States and this is all developing alongside a growing bio-medical and high technology sector that could…

They held a ribbon cutting for the completion of the Route 19 reconstruction through the Wexford flats, and in the same breath state that construction will continue on sidewalks, side roads, and traffic signals. This project will last another 4-5 months of on again off again lane closures. PennDot and Golden Triangle Construction completely butchered this project from start to "finish".   more ›

UPDATE ON DELAY: Finally! All Five Lanes to Open on Wexford Flats Area of Route 19

After years of traffic congestion—first from a too-narrow road and then from construction—Route 19 is close to completion.

UPDATE: The opening of all five lanes in the Wexford Flats area of Route 19 has been delayed ... but only by one day. PennDOT announced the delay because of expected cold temperatures tonight (Monday) that will not allow pavement markings to be placed.  Here is the original story, with changed dates in bold face: Nearly two years after construction started on the Wexford Flats section of Route 19, the end is in sight. The newly constructed five-lane configuration of the road also known as Perry Highway will open to traffic on Wednesday (originally it was Tuesday) weather permitting, PennDOT District 11 announced. Work to remove long-term traffic restrictions and apply final lane and pavement markings will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday (…

Close to completion? They haven't installed the new traffic signals at North Chapel Rd, they still have tons of concrete curb and sidewalk to lay, they'll still have to put in the concrete medians at the left turn only lanes at the intersections... It's more unsafe to open 1/4 mile of all five lanes, then have the right lane closed and everyone funnel back into one lane, drive another 1/8 of a …   more ›

Cranberry Approves Red Lobster Liquor License Transfer

Construction could begin on the new restaurant by January.

The wheels are in motion for a Red Lobster to replace the King’s Restaurant on Route 19 in Cranberry. At Thursday’s Board of Supervisors meeting, Cranberry officials unanimously approved an inter-municipal liquor license transfer for the seafood chain, which is owned by Darden Restaurants, Inc. Speaking on behalf of GMR Restaurants of Pennsylvania LLC—a subsidiary of Darden—attorney Mark Kozar told Cranberry officials during Thursday’s public hearing that the proposed 5,880 square foot restaurant would seat 220 people. The restaurant will employee about 100 workers, he said. “Red Lobster would be a great addition to Cranberry Township and provide residents with a different dining experience,” he said. The new restaurant would replace the …

Route 19, Ehrman Road Traffic Lanes to Reopen Next Week

Up next for the intersection is a traffic signal, plus a new Sheetz gas station and convenience store.

There’s good news for motorists heading north on Route 19—the right traffic lane near Ehrman Road should be reopen by next week. “As soon as the guide rails are up, the lanes will open back up,” said Jason Kratsas, Cranberry’s director of engineering. Working with Sheetz, which is building a new convenience store and gas station in the area, the township is adding a traffic signal at the intersection of Route 19 and Ehrman Road. The hillside where the Sheetz will be located already has been graded so that the gas station will be at street level with Ehrman Road.  Kratsas has said developers would contribute about $600,000 for the traffic signal and road project, which will be managed by the township. Cranberry will fund about $300,000 for …

Two Road Projects Causing Congestion for Cranberry-Area Commuters

Motorists on I-79 can expect more congestion near the exit to Seneca Valley’s secondary campus with new lane restrictions. Plus, road improvements on Route 19 in Marshall continue to tie up traffic.

Cranberry area commuters may not be able to catch a traffic break for several more months. On Tuesday, PennDOT announced the closure of the travel lanes on Interstate 79 North and South near the Zelienople exit. The lane restrictions will be in place for the next month as part of the work on a five-bridge preservation project costing $2.2 million. Motorists can expect congestion and delays in high-volume traffic periods, according to PennDOT. The project is expected to be complete by early November. Traffic also continues to be tied up on Route 19 at the border of Cranberry and Marshall Township near the Thorn Hill Industrial Park. The $3.68 million project, which started in mid-August, aims to improve Warrendale Bayne Road between Route …

Sound Off: How Do You Like the New Heights Drive?

The new roadway leading from Route 19 to the Cranberry Heights neighborhood is now open.

After a decade in the making, the new Heights Drive extension connecting the Cranberry Heights neighborhood to Route 19 is open. The road opened last week after extensive construction. A right turning lane onto Heights Drive also has been added to Route 19. In June, construction crews began cutting out the Heights Drive extension. At about 1,900 feet in length, the connector bisects the Deener family property, a working farm off Route 19. The Deeners sold the land to the township for about $175,000 last year. Originally dubbed the “northwest connector,” the road is an extension of the neighborhood’s Heights Drive. It provides a direct route to Route 19 for the people living in the 244 Cranberry Heights homes. Prior to the road’s opening, …

Holey Moley! Look Out for Deep Holes on Route 19 in Wexford Flats Construction Area

Crews are working on the area at the North Chapel Drive intersection in Pine Township.

Driving up North Chapel Drive to the traffic signal at the Route 19 intersection, I glanced to my right and exclaimed: Holey Moley! There—with orange-and-white cautionary signs around it—was one deep hole! Being a Patch editor, I just had to get a photo to post to show everyone else. So I pulled into the Aldi parking lot, climbed up the steep—but (mercifully) short—hill to the area that parallels Route 19 and started snapping photos. I do not, by the way, recommend doing this. I stayed a healthy distance away from the traffic zooming by on Route 19 (Perry Highway) as I took photos. Then I slipped back down the parking lot hillside, shoes covered in mud. As I glanced into the hole I initially spotted, I realized there is a nearly identical …

Just a metaphor, "Outraged", This construction has been going on for months and months and yet more months. Perhaps I should have suggested a subway from downtown Pittsburgh to Wexford to make the point about this excessive delay despite mostly terrific construction weather. On the plus side, it doe provide lots of work for the crews but they would be part of that half of that Romney nation …   more ›

Seneca Valley Students Heading to School Injured in Car Accident

A 17-year-old and three others are taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

A Seneca Valley student and his three teen passengers were injured during a collision Thursday morning on Route 19 near Tollgate Road in Jackson Township. Jackson police said the 17-year-old from Cranberry was driving north on Route 19 at about 7 a.m. when he collided with a Ford Taurus driven by James Bucek, 53, of Cranberry. Officer Zeke Reed said Bucek was turning left from Gudekunst Road north onto Route 19 when he collided with the Honda Prelude driven by the teen. Bucek was not injured, Reed said. Authorities are still determining the cause of the accident. Reed said it was not a head-on collision. “It was more of a sideswipe,” he said. The 17-year-old, who police are not identifying, was taken by ambulance to an area hospital, Reed …

I would like to know what the average rate of car accidents per year is involving Seneca Valley student drivers in and around the campus? It has always seemed to me poor judgement by the school district to allow juniors ( recently licensed drivers) to get parking permits to drive to school...not to mention the overly large amount of student parking passes that are given out (sold) each year. Is …   more ›

Roadwork in Wexford Flats Area of Route 19 Means Nightly Restrictions

Traffic will be reduced to single lanes in each direction.

Be careful when you plan your travel on Route 19 in the Wexford Flats area of Pine Township this week. Roadwork to apply the final riding surface will be happening from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m., Tuesday through Friday, as long as the weather permits, according to PennDOT District 11. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane in each direction. Vehicles will be shifted onto the northbound lanes between North Meadows Drive and Longvue Avenue, PennDOT stated in an announcement. Motorists should be prepared for changing traffic patterns. Access will be provided for all businesses along Route 19 in the construction zone. Crews will be applying the final riding surface in this area, which is Phase I of the overall $18.1 million project to improve 2.33 …

Follow the Arrow: New Traffic Pattern a Go at Route 19 Intersection

As a result of an increase in traffic accidents, motorists will have to wait for a green arrow before turning left at the intersection with North Boundary and Glen Eden roads.

Starting Wednesday, motorists on Route 19 in Cranberry will no longer be able to make left turns onto Glen Eden or North Boundary roads without a green arrow to guide them. Prior to Aug. 8, northbound traffic on Route 19 was permitted to make a left turn at the traffic signal onto Glen Eden Road if there was a green light. The same went for southbound traffic on the highway turning left at the same traffic signal onto North Boundary Road. In both scenarios, drivers with a green light would yield to oncoming traffic. No longer. In response to an increase in accidents at the intersection over the last year and a half, drivers will now be prohibited—as indicated by a red light—from turning left unless a green left arrow is showing. “…

Walt, that particular intersection isn't solely an issue of bad drivers. There is a steep grade to North Boundary approaching Rt 19. If you are on Glen Eden and turning onto Rt 19 north, it is very difficult to see cars approaching from North Boundary. Likewise, of you are coming from North Boundary and going straight into Glen Eden, you cannot see those cars turning onto 19 until you are into …   more ›
