Judge McDaniel Calls North Hills, Hopewell Rapist the "Definition of Danger"

Arthur Henderson will spend 61 to 122 years in prison for raping and robbing two women in Ross and one in Hopewell.

Calling it "one of the most horrible cases" she's ever heard, Allegheny County Common Pleas Court Judge Donna Jo McDaniel on Tuesday imposed what amounts to a life sentence on convicted rapist Arthur Henderson. The judge ordered Henderson, 39, of the North Side, to spend 61 to 122 years in prison for raping and robbing at gunpoint two women in Ross and one in Hopewell over a three-day period in January 2012. The Ross Township rapes were reported Saturday, Jan. 7, at the Woodhawk Club Apartments complex on Johnanna Drive and on Monday, Jan. 9, at the Cascades Apartment complex off Cemetery Lane.  The Hopewell rape occurred Jan. 7, the same morning as the first attack in Ross.  Jurors deliberated for less than four hours before returning a …

Ross Rape Investigation: What it Took to Catch Arthur Henderson

The combined work of four police departments and the FBI was critical in getting the convicted rapist off of the streets.

Arthur Henderson sits in the Allegheny County jail awaiting sentencing on March 26 for raping and robbing two women in Ross Township and one in Hopewell during a three-day period in January of last year. His conviction Monday was the culmination hundreds of hours of investigative work, primarily by Ross and Hopewell police.  "This is a case that exemplifies the importance of cooperation in the criminal justice system," said Ross Detective Brian Kohlhepp, who was one of the witnesses for the prosecution. "The investigation was completed seamlessly with the assistance of the detectives from Ohio Township and Hopewell." Kohlhepp said the office of the Allegheny County Medical examiner played a key role in getting Henderson in custody just …

Nearby: Ross Man Leaves Car Running to Warm It Up, Someone Steals It

Police warn the practice of leaving an unattended car running during cold weather is a dangerous one.

Just an FYI to anyone who is thinking about leaving a running car unattended to warm up during Wednesday's frigid temperatures—don't do it. Ross Township Police have charged one man after recovering a stolen car in the parking lot outside the upper entrance to Dick's Sporting Goods store in the Northway Mall Tuesday morning. Jason Michael Mohoska, 35, of Pittsburgh, is charged with theft, receiving stolen property and resisting arrest, according to court records.  Police say the thief didn't have to work hard to steal the Lexus sedan because it had been left running and unlocked outside the owner's home, less than a mile from the mall. "The owner was warming up the car, and when he returned to the driveway, it was gone," said Detective …

News Nearby: Sexual Attacks in Ross Appear to be Random, Police Say

One woman attacked Saturday and another Monday after walking their dogs in the early morning hours are in their mid-20s and apparently have no connection to their attacker, police said.

The two Ross Township women sexually assaulted in their apartments in the early morning hours after returning from walking their dogs apparently do not have any connection to their attacker, according to police.  "These appear to be random," said Ross Police spokesman Sgt. Benjamin Dripps.  As of noon, police were still on the scene at the Cascade Apartments at 100 East West Drive, where the second assault took place Monday morning.  A neighbor who gave his name only as John P. said he was feeling physically sick over the news.  "I've lived here a long time. This isn't the Cascades. This is a friendly community," he said. "I hope they catch the bastard."  The woman, who is in her mid-20s, police said, left her apartment to walk her dog at …
