Improvements Ahead: Work Begins on Route 228 Ramp Project in Cranberry

The new ramps are expected to increase traffic flow in the area.

Motorists on Route 228 will be viewing lots of orange cones in the area—at least for the next two years. Work began this week on new northbound and southbound on-ramps leading from Route 228 to Interstate 79 that should alleviate traffic in the area. The $14.78 PennDOT project will eliminate two turning movements from Route 228 to I-79, improving access for motorists. The project involves the construction of a new northbound on-ramp, a new southbound loop ramp and the reconstruction of the southbound off-ramp at the interchange of I-79 and Route 228. Currently, westbound drivers on Route 228 who want to get on I-79 must turn left across oncoming traffic to get onto the interstate’s onramps. While they’re making those lefts, the through …

UPDATE ON DELAY: Finally! All Five Lanes to Open on Wexford Flats Area of Route 19

After years of traffic congestion—first from a too-narrow road and then from construction—Route 19 is close to completion.

UPDATE: The opening of all five lanes in the Wexford Flats area of Route 19 has been delayed ... but only by one day. PennDOT announced the delay because of expected cold temperatures tonight (Monday) that will not allow pavement markings to be placed.  Here is the original story, with changed dates in bold face: Nearly two years after construction started on the Wexford Flats section of Route 19, the end is in sight. The newly constructed five-lane configuration of the road also known as Perry Highway will open to traffic on Wednesday (originally it was Tuesday) weather permitting, PennDOT District 11 announced. Work to remove long-term traffic restrictions and apply final lane and pavement markings will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday (…

Close to completion? They haven't installed the new traffic signals at North Chapel Rd, they still have tons of concrete curb and sidewalk to lay, they'll still have to put in the concrete medians at the left turn only lanes at the intersections... It's more unsafe to open 1/4 mile of all five lanes, then have the right lane closed and everyone funnel back into one lane, drive another 1/8 of a …   more ›

According to PennDOT, there will be traffic restrictions from 9 tonight until 6 a.m. Friday on Route 228 between the northbound ramps to Interstate 79 and the Cranberry Woods/Crider Road intersection because of a driveway that is being constructed for the Cranberry Crossroads shopping center. The 98,940-square-feet retail space will include a two-story Dick’s Sporting Goods store as its anchor. ECHO Realty, a Pittsburgh-based real estate and retail development company, is developing the shopping center. Freedom Road Improvement Project Begins Monday

PennDOT says construction should last through winter.

One of Cranberry’s busiest corridors is about to undergo construction. On Monday, PennDOT will begin a $1.52 million project to widen Freedom Road from Haine School Road to Haldeman Drive. Construction will take place between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. each evening. Traffic work during the night will have alternating single-lanes controlled by flaggers. The traffic then will be shifted to the widened areas to allow for remaining widening and median construction. PennDOT’s District 10 said this work would be performed between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. and feature one lane in each direction. The major construction work is expected to be complete by winter of 2011, according to PennDOT. The work includes widening Freedom Road from two to three lanes and the …

They are falling waaaay to short on this project. This cooridor needs to be two lanes both ways. A third lane added , presumably for left hand turns, will do nothing for the already overly burdened traffic on this road. Waste of time and money! Do it right Pendot or don't do it at all.   more ›

* Look for Single Lanes on I-79 in Marshall This Weekend

No weekend restrictions are planned for Warrendale-Bayne Road.

If you plan to travel I-79 this weekend, listen up. Earlier this week, we reported that traffic on I-79 will be funneled down to one lane in Marshall Township, in the area of the bridges over Mingo Road. (Click here for that story.) That restriction began at midnight Friday instead of 7 a.m. today, according to PennDOT. The good news is that no restrictions will occur this weekend on Warrendale-Bayne Road, PennDOT said.  The single-lane restriction will occur in both directions on I-79 between Exits 73 and 75 in Marshall Township, according to PennDOT Press Officer James B. Struzzi II. Crews will be installing a temporary concrete barrier as part of a $10 million project for improvements on northbound and southbound bridges over Mingo Road…
