On Saturday, Cranberry resident Jim Nickel made a childhood dream come true. During a silent auction held at the Seneca Valley’s Sweetness & Light Gala at Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh, the Seneca Valley board member placed the winning bid on an opportunity to throw out the first pitch at an upcoming Pittsburgh Pirates home game, something he has wanted to do since he was 12 years old. “It was a fun, fun night,” he said. Nickel wasn’t the evening’s only big winner. That designation was reserved for the Seneca Valley School District. Superintendent Dr. Tracy Vitale said the gala raised at least $10,000 for the Seneca Valley Foundation, a private, tax-exempt nonprofit corporation that seeks donations and patrons to help develop capital projects, …

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the Seneca Valley Foundation will host a ‘Sweetness & Light Gala’ at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh. The gala will include numerous baskets to raffle and items to auction off, all of which total more than $7,000 in value. The gala also will feature performances by the Seneca Valley Strings Quartet. Small plate appetizers will be served and cocktails will be made available. The evening culminates at 8 p.m. with a performance of “My Fair Lady” by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The 12-year-old Pine-Richland resident will join the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra on March 12.
Jackie Evancho is one busy kid. Her latest album, Songs From the Silver Screen, is set to be released Oct. 2. And she is also set for another hometown concert. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra recently announced Jackie will join the PSO at Heinz Hall for a concert celebrating great songs from the movies at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 12.
