Patch sites across the country will join in a Web Moment of Silence to mark the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy issued a proclamation calling on the citizens of Connecticut to observe Dec. 21, 2012, as a day of mourning. Malloy sent a letter to all the nation's governors asking them to observe a moment of silence in remembrance of the fallen. “Mourning this tragedy has extended beyond Newtown, beyond the borders of Connecticut, and has spread across the nation and the world,” Malloy said in a statement. “On behalf of the State of Connecticut, we appreciate the letters and calls of support that have been delivered to our state and to the family members during their hour of need.” …

Mars Superintendent sends home letter informing parents of the incident at the district's primary center. Police are reviewing camera footage.
Mars Area Superintendent Dr. William Pettigrew said the district is investigating a report that a stranger was walking on the grounds at Mars Area Primary Center along Route 228 in Adams Township Tuesday morning. In letter sent to parents later that day, Pettigrew said administrators have contacted Adams Township Police about the incident. “Mars Area School District strives to remain proactive in the protection of its students and employees,” Pettigrew wrote. “The district will keep you informed of any additional information regarding this incident, as it becomes available.” As of Wednesday, Adams police still are investigating the incident. In wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary mass shooting, Dick's Sporting Goods also has removed all guns from the store closest to Newtown, CT.
In wake of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, two major retailers are pulling the plug on sales of certain semi-automatic weapons nationwide. Dick’s Sporting Goods, one of the largest sporting goods retailers in the world, has suspended sales of some semi-automatic rifles from all stores. The company, which is headquartered in Moon Township, also has removed all guns from its chain closest to Newtown, CT. In a statement, the store said it ordered the move out of respect for the victims and families of Newtown. Seneca Valley Superintendent Dr. Tracy Vitale reached out to parents Sunday with a letter that addressed rumors of a shooting being planned at the senior high school. She also reflected on Friday’s tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., and detailed the district’s own security measures. On Friday, Jackson Township Police Chief Terry Seilhamer told Cranberry Patch officers were investigating a rumor that a student was planning a shooting at Seneca Valley High School.
