The developer hopes to begin construction on the furniture store by July.
Cranberry’s Planning Advisory Commission on Monday unanimously gave the green light to plans for a La-Z-Boy furniture store in the Cranberry Crossroads development. Developer Phil Bishop of ECHO Realty said the 12,063 square-foot store would be the final piece to the plaza, which currently is under construction on Route 228. When finished, the shopping center will feature a two-story Dick’s Sporting Goods at its center. Cranberry’s Board of Supervisors is expected to vote later this month on whether to give final approval to the La-Z-Boy plans. Bishop said the store would function as a showroom gallery only, meaning customers won’t be able to cart their furniture choices from inside the building on the same day they visit it. Instead, …

The boarding house also will provide a doggie daycare and training lessons
Linda Beard and Janet Best have always treated their dogs like family, which is why they wanted to open a dog care facility that does the same. “They live in a nice home all the time,” Beard said of her own pooches. “So when we go away, I wouldn’t want to put them somewhere that would be stressful to them or a lot different to them than a home environment.” On Monday, Cranberry’s Planning Advisory Commission approved co-owner Beard and Best’s plans for 5th Avenue Fido, a luxury indoor kennel and doggie day care facility that will be located along Route 19 at the vacant Northgate Honda building. The plans will next go before the Cranberry Board of Supervisors later this month for final approval. Beard, a Cranberry resident, said 5th Avenue …

The interchangeable PVC back plate for the just-on-the-market cellhelmet case is manufactured in Cranberry.
Sure, we’ve all seen those iPhone covers that promise to be indestructible—which is just fine and dandy. The problem, according to David Artuso, is that most of those covers look, and feel, like a big plastic brick. So he, along with Michael Kane and Bryan McHenry decided to do something about it. Originally, Kane and McHenry, who cofounded cellhelmet.com, an online store selling cell phone accessories, strived to create an unbreakable iPhone case. They soon found it impossible to do without the unwanted bulky exterior. Utilizing a dense polyurethane rubber, they instead came up with a sleek, modern casing that offers good protection—and backed it with a guarantee. They call it the cellhelmet™. If your iPhone accidentally breaks when …

Get a gander at what's new—and what's just opened—in the area.
It seems like everywhere you look in Cranberry these days there’s a crane or a bulldozer at work on a new development. For those curious about what’s under construction in Cranberry, we’ve put together a handy list—and some photos. You’ve watched it go from a foundation to a five-story brick edifice overlooking Route 228. Now, the Hilton Garden Inn is just about ready to open. Featuring The Great American Grill restaurant, the 136-room hotel is scheduled to begin welcoming guests May 29. The Hilton Garden Inn isn’t the only new hotel in town. A Courtyard by Marriott is being built from the ground up on Cranberry Woods Drive, just a stone’s throw from the already-established (and larger) Marriott Pittsburgh North on Route 228. Designed with…

Developers introduce tentative plans for a Courtyard hotel on Route 228.
Members of Cranberry Township's Planning Advisory Commission got their first glimpse at tentative plans for a Courtyard by Marriott Hotel in the township at their workshop meeting Monday. Terry Dammeyer, senior vice-president of construction for Winegardner and Hammons, Inc. in Cincinnati, OH, said the Courtyard would be built next to the already-established Marriott Pittsburgh North on Route 228. Planned for 164 acres in the Cranberry Woods office park, the proposed Courtyard would feature “select service,” meaning it would hold restaurants and meeting rooms, according to Dammeyer. It also would be significantly smaller than the full-service Marriott Pittsburgh North, which opened in July 2003. That building, Dammeyer said, has 295 rooms…
