KDKA: Family Speaks Out About Mental Illness of Man Accused of Killing Grandmother

Johnston family does not want grandmother's death to be in vain, the news station reports.

The family of a 26-year-old Richland man charged with killing his grandmother spoke out Tuesday about his mental illness in an exclusive interview with KDKA. Levi Daniel Staver was charged with criminal homicide a week ago, Feb. 19, after he stabbed his grandmother, Connie Johnston, in the back as she sat at the kitchen table eating breakfast with his grandfather, according to police. Staver told police an archangel told him to stab her, according to the criminal complaint. The grandmother's husband, the Rev. David Johnston, and daughter Ruth said they wanted to raise awareness about mental illness so Connie Johnston's death is not in vain, KDKA reports. Gov. Corbett: Too Early To Tell if Funding for Mental Health Treatment Will Increase

While visiting St. Barnabas' Crystal Conservatories during a Presents for Patients event, the governor also spoke about the fiscal cliff and Pennsylvania's budget.

Gov. Tom Corbett—who called for more attention to mental illness in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary shootings—would not commit Thursday to increased funding for mental health treatment. The governor said it is too early in the budget process to commit to increasing or decreasing funding for anything. His remarks came during a press conference at St. Barnabas' Crystal Conservatories in Valencia after a Presents for Patients presentation.
