Steelers’ Kirby Wilson Opens Up to ESPN About Recovery

Severely burned in a fire at his Seven Fields townhouse last year, the running backs coach talks to ESPN's Josina Anderson about that night—and making his way back to the football field.

Just 48 hours before the Pittsburgh Steelers Wildcard playoffs loss to the Denver Broncos in January, a fire broke out in the kitchen of Kirby Wilson’s townhome in Seven Fields. A veteran running backs coach with the Steelers, Wilson suffered second- and third-degree burns on almost half of his body from the flames. He also had lung damage from a smoke-inhalation injury. Three months later, Wilson, who initially was put into a medically induced coma, was returning to Steelers headquarters to participate in the NFL draft. By the time training camp rolled around in July, he was jogging up and down the sidelines with his players. On Sunday, Wilson opened up about his recovery to ESPN’s Josina Anderson. Fire Marshal Rules Grease Fire Destroyed Home of Steelers Coach

Investigators said they've determined that running backs coach Kirby Wilson was injured after trying to put out the flames in a kitchen blaze.

Investigators have determined that grease ignited to cause the blaze that severely burned Steelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson last month at his home in Seven Fields, a state police fire marshal said today. Trooper Luke Nelson of the state police barracks in Butler said Wilson had been cooking chicken about 2:45 a.m. Jan. 6 in the kitchen of his townhome on Jameson Way when the stove caught fire. Nelson said evidence suggests Wilson, 50, was injured when he attempted to put out the flames. The coach, who still is undergoing medical treatment at UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, has little to no recollection of the fire, Nelson said. The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental. According to a statement from the Steelers …

The 50-year-old was severely burned Jan. 6 when an early-morning fire broke out in his townhouse on Jameson Way in Seven Fields. A medical helicopter transported him to UPMC Mercy in Pittsburgh, where he remains in critical condition in the hospital's Trauma Burn Center. "In addition to burns sustained over 45 percent of his body, he has suffered a smoke inhalation injury and will require multiple operative procedures in the future," the Steelers statement said.   News of the fire's cause might soon be on the way. Fire Marshal Luke Nelson of the state police barracks in Butler confirmed the fire started …
