As part of her sentencing, Orie Melvin must write letters of apology to state judges, her former staff and her family.
Convicted former State Supreme Court Justice Joan Orie Melvin was sentenced Tuesday to house arrest followed by probation and must send written apologies on photographs of herself to every judge in the Commonwealth, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. An Allegheny County Common Pleas Court jury convicted Orie Melvin in February on all but one count of using her former Superior Court staff and that of her sister to run campaigns. Orie Melvin was sentenced to three years of house arrest followed by two years of probation and must serve in a soup kitchen three times a week, the P-G said. Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas Judge Lester Nauhaus also ordered that Orie Melvin have her photo taken with an official county photographer so…

The Republican from Shaler Township scores decisive win over Democrat Dr. Sharon Brown.
Republican Randy Vulakovich won Tuesday's special election and will fill the 40th District state senatorial seat formerly held by Jane Orie. “I’m ecstatic. I’m in a little in awe because all these people you see here worked so hard and got behind me in a short period of time," Vulakovich said Tuesday night at Monte Cello's Restaurant in the Hampton Shoppes on Route 8 in Hampton Township where he was joined by about 300 supporters. "And to put a race together in that short period of time and get in full gear is a lot of work. Everything goes according to how well they work. I’m very blessed with a lot of friends and a lot of people who have faith in me.” With 100 percent of precincts reporting in Allegheny County, Vulakovich has 12,065 …

Don Bindas considers himself the "alternative conservative" in the Aug. 7 special election.
Wexford automotive dealer Don Bindas insists there’s a third choice for voters in the Aug 7 special election to finish former State Sen. Jane Orie’s term—and he’s it. Bindas is running as a write-in candidate, labeling himself at the “alternative conservative.” He is facing endorsed Republican, state Rep. Randy Vulakovich and democratic nominee Dr. Sharon Brown. Recently, the readers of the North Hills, Cranberry and Pine-Richland Patches were asked to submit questions to Brown and Vulakovich. The three editors of those Patch sites assembled those questions, and added a few of their own, for the candidates. Their answers were published in a series of stories earlier this month. Below are many of those same questions and answers from …

Comments are the first exchange between the Democratic contender and Republican Rep. Randy Vulakovich.
Dr. Sharon Brown, D-McCandless, has fired what appears to the first salvo in the race to replace Jane Orie as state senator in Pennsylvania’s 40th district by referring to her opponent, Rep. Randy Vulakovich, R-Shaler, as “another recycled politician.” Voters will decide between Brown and Vulakovich in the Aug. 7 special election to fill Orie’s unexpired term. She resigned following her conviction on charges she used her state-funded staff for political work. She was sentenced to between 2 ½ to 10 years in prison. “While Harrisburg is desperately in need of new leadership, the local Republican Party chose to recycle a current member of the inept legislature to run for state Senate,” a statement from Brown’s campaign said. “We need real …

Democrat Dr. Sharon Brown and Randy Vulakovich, R-Shaler will face off to replace former Sen. Jane Orie in Pennsylvania’s 40th district. Here’s your chance to pose questions to the candidates.
On Aug. 7, voters in the 40th Senatorial district will chose a candidate to fill the remaining term of former Sen. Jane Orie, who was sentenced in May to 2 ½ to 10 years in prison after her March conviction of using her legislative staff to perform political work. In voting last weekend, Republican leaders in Allegheny and Butler counties chose Rep. Randy Vulakovich, R-Shaler, to face Democratic nominee Sharon Brown. Vulakovich, a former police sergeant with the Shaler department, was first elected to represent the 30th District in 2007. He replaced former Rep. Jeff Habay, who, like Orie, was convicted of using his staff to do campaign work on state time. He will face Democrat Dr. Sharon Brown, of McCandless, who was the only candidate …

The Republican from Shaler beats out former Congresswoman Melissa Hart for the nomination.
The votes are in and Republicans have chosen state Rep. Randy Vulakovich, R-Shaler, to take on Democratic nominee Sharon Brown in the Aug. 7 special election to replace former Sen. Jane Orie in the 40th District. Vulakovich, a former police sergeant with the Shaler department, beat out former Congresswoman Melissa Hart, of Bradford Woods, during a three-hour conference held Saturday morning at the Marriott in Cranberry. Republican committee members from Butler and Allegheny counties chose Vulakovich over Hart in a 48-33 vote. While at least eight other candidates also expressed interest in becoming the GOP nominee, Jeff Smith, chairman of the Butler County Republican Committee, said the votes came down to a two-way contest between …

Under a plan approved Friday, Cranberry will be transplanted to the 21st Senatorial District, currently represented Sen. Mary Jo White, in 2014.
The Cranberry area is set to have new legislative representation—and not just because of former Sen. Jane Orie’s resignation from office last month following her conviction on corruption charges. A revised legislative map approved Friday moves the 40th District—formerly represented by Orie—to the other side of the state, but reunites Cranberry with the majority of Butler County. Locally, officials have given the plan their tentative support. “It’s a step in the right direction, but it still misses the mark as far as I’m concerned,” said Cranberry supervisor Dick Hadley. In a 4-1 vote, the legislative reapportionment committee—which is tasked with redrawing legislative boundaries based on population shifts from the 2010 census—gave final …

Dr. Sharon Brown will face a GOP candidate in the Aug. 7 special election.
Dr. Sharon Brown, 59, of McCandless, is the Democratic candidate for the Pennsylvania Senate seat in the 40th district, formerly held by Jane Orie. Democratic leaders in Allegheny and Butler Counties voted for Brown, who was the only candidate seeking her party’s endorsement, at a meeting Thursday night at the Cranberry Public Library. She will face a still unknown GOP candidate in the Aug. 7 special election. “She’s our candidate, and we will give her our full support,” said Dan McClain, Democratic Vice Chairman from Ross Township. Republicans are expected to select a candidate within a couple of weeks. Brown is currently a nursing administrator for the Allegheny County Community College, according to the Project Vote Smart web site…
