The annual event downtown includes lots of fun activities for visitors.
Ring in 2013 with fellow Pittsburghers at Highmark's First Night Pittsburgh event. The family-friendly event is produced by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and sponsored by Highmark. First Night provides visitors the opportunity to ring in the new year while celebrating the arts—dance, music, theater, comedy, hands-on activities and more. Several of the city's theaters will host a variety of performances. The event begins at 6 p.m. with the Dollar Bank children's fireworks display and a performance by American Idol finalist—and Washington County resident—Adam Brock & The Soul Band (at the stage on Seventh Street and Penn Avenue). The North American Aerospace Defense Command has a website that now offers a Santa tracker mobile app to follow the jolly man's magical flight.
They sent him their wish lists, sat on his lap, and left cookies and milk for his arrival. Now the only thing left for children to do is track Santa's progress as he delivers gifts around the world on Christmas Eve. Thanks to the folks behind the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) website, families worldwide can now follow Santa's Christmas journey in real time. The tradition started in 1955 after an advertisement for Sears Roebuck & Co. misprinted a telephone number for a special "Santa hotline." Instead of reaching Kris Kringle, the number put kids through to the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) Commander-in-Chief’s operations, according to a description on the NORAD Tracks Santa Facebook page, which has more than …
Editor Jessica Bruni Sinichak grew up participating in the traditional Italian feast, but what are you doing?
I'll admit it, as a child, I really didn't appreciate taking part in The Feast of The Seven Fishes, the traditional Italian-American meal served on Christmas Eve that involves no meat. I was a picky eater, and the mere thought of dining on eels, smelts and a variety of other exotic creatures from the sea was enough to make me cringe. Instead, I stuck to salads and plain bowls of buttered noodles as I wondered why we couldn't have a ham or turkey like everyone else I knew. As I got older – and became more open to other foods -- I began to appreciate the tradition behind the meal, which, in my family, dates to the early 1920s. At that time, the Cangi and the Bruni families settled on Larimer Avenue in East Liberty, a predominantly Italian-…

Most college students are in recovery mode from finals week and have left few hints about what they'd like for Christmas. This list might help.
I asked my son Sam, a sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh, to come up with some last minute gift ideas for college students. Below are his suggestions. Being a second-year college student, I found that more practical gifts had many benefits to them, especially as I got older. The easiest way to find good gift ideas for your college student is to think of items that you are certain they will use. Anything from new accessories for their phone to cooking utensils can go a long way. Follow us on Twitter | Like us on Facebook Check out some of today's other top stories here .

Local stars Brett Keisel, Troy Polamalu and of course Charlie Batch search for the “true meaning of the season” in this Charlie Brown parody.
As the playoffs draw closer, Pittsburgh’s favorite backup quarterback is searching for the true “meaning of the season” this Christmas—at least on YouTube. A new parody of the classic A Charlie Brown Christmas features "Peanuts"-inspired versions of some of your favorite Pittsburgh Steelers from Patch communities, including Brett Keisel (Cranberry area) and Troy Polamalu (Pine). The video stars Homestead's Charlie Batch, who asks a beard-petting Keisel as well as new father Ben Roethlisberger to help him find the true meaning of the Steelers season. “The playoffs season is coming up and this whole team has stopped believing,” the Batch character complains. The parody also features a thumb-sucking Mike Wallace and Polamalu as piano-playing …
