Students get rewarded after collecting thousands of pounds of recycled materials from the school.
Haine Middle School students are recycling champions. After months of participating in a recycling competition, students in Susan Huber and Jeremiah Friday’s homerooms recently learned they have won the school contest—and will be rewarded with a surprise field trip. The contest was inspired by Haine’s participation in Keep America Beautiful’s “Recycle Bowl” competition, which the school entered last fall. At the time, students were hoping to learn about the value of recycling, and perhaps finish among the top schools in the state for the event. They had no idea what a big deal recycling would become just six months later. As part of the “Recycle Bowl” competition, the fifth and sixth grade students created a recycling program and …

Rowan and Haine students wage a friendly battle to recycle the most items at their schools. Check out their promotional videos on Patch.
Sure, the Super Bowl doesn’t take place until Sunday, but Seneca Valley students have already declared a winner—and it’s the environment. Students at Haine Middle School and Rowan Elementary reccently took part in the 2012 Keep America Beautiful Recycle Bowl. They also engaged in a little friendly competition with each other when it came to which school could recycle the most items. At Haine, teacher Allison Stebbins said her fifth and sixth grade purpose students would give up their study hall once a week to go through garbage bins in various classrooms and pull out the recyclable materials. Throughout the four-week contest, which took place in October and November, the Haine students recycled more than 3,200 pounds of materials, Stebbins…

Haine Middle School students are celebrating the holiday by giving back to those who are less fortunate. With the help of parents and teachers, the students in Amy Scott and Mary Burglund’s classrooms chose the Light of Life Rescue Mission in Pittsburgh as the focus of their Thanksgiving project. Light of Life provides for the homeless as well as families in need in surrounding communities. According to Scott, students decided that providing needy families with a complete Thanksgiving meal was the most important way they could make a difference on Nov. 22. While the Light of Life mission provides a turkey for the families, the nonprofit relies on donations to make it a complete meal. The middle schoolers made donations and collected …

Haine Middle School student are learning how to make positive changes in their environment—including at the front entrance to their school. On Friday, Oct. 26, the fifth and sixth graders, plus staff members, planted 180 tulips in front of their school as part of “Make-A-Difference” Day. The students also read A Child's Garden, A Story of Hope by Michael Foreman and discussed its message of healing and renewal. The school planted the tulips as a way to show how to "make a difference" at the school and in the community, according to the district. Teachers Ken Cahall and John Schmidt, along with several fifth and sixth grade students, also planted a new tree in the front of the school. The tree replaced an old tree damaged by lighting …

If it were up to these sixth-graders, Romney would have won the vote Tuesday.
Republican Mitt Romney has been declared the next President of the United States—at least he has at Haine Middle School. On Tuesday, sixth-grade students conducted a mock election. Using their own version of the Electoral College System, which they learned about in class leading up to Election Day, they chose Romney as the nation’s leader. In real life Nov. 6, President Barack Obama defeated Romney. But sixth-graders didn’t know that early Tuesday as they threw their support behind either the Democratic or Republican contender. Based on population, each of the 14 sixth-grade classrooms were given a “state” and a certain number of electoral votes after students voted in the popular election. On stage during an assembly Tuesday, those …

The Beach Blast is an annual tradition at Haine Middle School before students move on to the secondary campus in the fall.
There were beach balls, flower leis and even palm trees as sixth-graders celebrated their last full day as Haine Middle School students Thursday with the annual beach blast party. “It’s kind of a tradition here at Haine,” said Susan Linton, one of the Parent Teacher Organization members who helped to organize the event. “It’s the last hurrah.” In the fall, the preteens will be head to Jackson Township to attend the seventh-and-eighth-grade middle school at Seneca Valley’s secondary campus, which also includes the intermediate and the senior high school. But first, they were ready to party. The send-off celebration for the students included a dance party, volleyball and basketball games, a photo booth and karaoke. There also were chances to…

The Butler County Conservation District recently honored fifth-grade students in teacher Allison Stebbins’ Rainkeepers program at Haine Middle School with its 2011 Outstanding Youth Award. The group received the award during the district’s annual youth awards banquet in late March. Through the years, Stebbins’ students have won numerous awards for their conservation efforts—and they continue to promote the use of rain barrels as a way to conserve water. The Rainkeepers routinely provide educational classes to members of the community. Both of the workshops they held this year at the Cranberry Township Municipal Center in Cranberry were filled to capacity. -- Information and photo submitted by Seneca Valley School District. Steve Smith is running for the state House of Representatives
Veteran Seneca Valley educator Steve Smith, principal at Haine Middle School, is staging a write-in campaign to take on incumbent state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, R-Cranberry, in the April 24 primary election. Smith launched a Facebook page a few days ago to announce his candidacy for the state House of Representatives. To be on the ballot in the November general election, Smith will need more than 300 votes in the spring primary. “Over the years, I have been honored to have your support as a friend, a colleague, a neighbor, or in some other way,” he wrote on the site. “Today, I turn to you once again for your support as I embark upon a new endeavor: running for State Representative in Pennsylvania’s 12th District.” Smith said his campaign will …

When Walmart donated $100,000 to Pennsylvania’s six Junior Achievement chapters earlier this month, Haine Middle School in Cranberry was chosen as the check presentation site. “Haine has a lot of programs with us at the middle-school level, and they are mostly going to be benefiting from the donation from Walmart,” said Lauren O’Leary of Junior Achievement of Western Pennsylvania. Dedicated to educating students about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy through hands-on programs, Junior Achievement is a national nonprofit. The $100,000 will be used to support the organization’s “Graduation Pathways” program, which encourages students to stay in school and graduate. Middle school is a key time to reach out to …
