Patch Poll: Should Colleges and Universities Allow Students to Carry Guns on Campus?

Some Pennsylvania college campuses—including Slippery Rock in Butler County—are allowing students to carry more than just their books.

At least five Pennsylvania state-owned universities are now allowing guns on campus after the state’s lawyers concluded that an outright ban on weapons was probably unconstitutional, according to KDKA-TV. Weapons at five universities--Kutztown, Shippensburg, Edinboro, Slippery Rock and Millersville--are now allowed on campus, though they are still generally banned from school buildings and athletic events, KDKA reported. Students with concealed-carry permits had questioned the constitutionality of blanket weapons bans at state-owned universities, prompting a legal review that found such bans were vulnerable to court challenge. About a year ago, the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education provided a model weapons policy for …

I'm a firm believer in the second amendment, and also that "gun-free" zones only create areas where the general public, and in instances of schools, some of the least defensible members of the public are completely unprotected. A criminal or other person intent on committing an act of violence will do so, whether or not you outlaw the materials he/she uses or make guns illegal in certain places. …   more ›

NRA Calls for 'Armed Security' Around Schools

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," the NRA's Wayne LaPierre said.

In a Friday morning press conference in Washington DC, the National Rifle Association broke its weeklong silence following the horrific shooting of 26 people at a school in Newtown, CT and called for a surge of gun-carrying "good guys" around American schools. NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre called for a new kind of American domestic security revolving around armed civilians, arguing that "the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun." "We care about our president, so we protect him with armed Secret Service agents," LaPierre said. "Members of Congress work in offices surrounded by Capitol Police officers. Yet, when it comes to our most beloved, innocent, and vulnerable members of the American family…

Petition Urges Dick's Sporting Goods to End Ammunition Sales

Gun control advocates are asking the Moon-based sporting goods retailer to stop stocking high-powered magazines.

A Mississippi teacher is circulating a petition online requesting that Dick's Sporting Goods discontinue the sale of high-powered ammunition in light of a Colorado movie theater massacre that killed 12 and wounded 58.  The petition, which has gained more than 4,000 signatures, asks the national sporting goods retailer, which is headquartered in Moon Township, to stop selling high-capacity magazines in its stores and online.   24-year-old James Holmes is charged with 24 counts of murder and 116 counts of attempted murder after Colorado police said he opened fire last month in a theater during a showing of the Batman film Dark Knight Rises, killing more than a dozen moviegoers. Authorities said he used a high-powered, semi-automatic assault…

C'mon Cheryl - Mitt is gone and so do stop the "socialistic" jargon or at least find out what the term means and it is most certainly not the "communist" implication slapped on it. Wait until you need or want to collect your SS and Medicare/Medicaid that the GOP wanted to demolish - and still does. Unless, of course you have a small stash in Switzerland or the Caymans for your golden years.   more ›
