Freedom Square Diner Hosting Annual Christmas Giving Dinners

Proceeds benefit Gleaners Food Bank in Cranberry.

Freedom Square Diner in Cranberry is once again giving back to the community with its annual Christmas Giving Dinner.  “It’s just something we’ve always done,” diner owner Tom Cross said of the event, which is now in its fifth year. From 3 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3 and Tuesday, Dec. 4. Freedom Square will donate half of all sales to the nonprofit Gleaners Food Bank of Cranberry to benefit local families. In a twist from last year’s event, where only a limited menu was served, the full menu is available for the giving dinners. Linda Heery, director of Gleaner’s, said Cross first approached her in 2008 about providing a Christmas meal to those in need in the community. The Chamber, CTCC Name Cranberry's 2012 Business and Citizen of the Year

The organizations honor Freedom Square Diner as well as longtime Cranberry resident and advocate Frank Petrone.

Since he opened Freedom Square Diner almost four years ago, Tom Cross, of Cranberry, said he has tried to participate in fundraisers and events that benefit local nonprofits, including donations to the Cranberry CUP, Gleaners Food Bank and The Miracle League of Southwestern Pennsylvania. “That’s just what being part of the community is about,” he said. His efforts have not gone unnoticed. The Chamber of Commerce Inc., which serves Cranberry and the North Hills, and Cranberry Township Community Chest, an organization that partners with local nonprofit organizations, have named Freedom Square Diner the 2012 Business of the Year. I have had the opportunity to deal with both Tom and Frank through my work with the Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company. These two define the term gentlemen and community servant. Readers’ Choice Poll: Freedom Square Diner Nabs Best Brunch Win

Fans of the family-owned restaurant pushed it ahead of First Watch.

Congratulations go out this week to the Freedom Square Diner! The family-owned restaurant on Freedom Road blew away the competition in this week’s poll asking readers which business in the Cranberry area serves up the best brunch. The diner received 78 percent of the votes. In second place was Cranberry’s First Watch, which had 12 percent of the votes. “We just appreciate all the people in Cranberry,” said Shawn Cross, whose family owns the restaurant. “We do a lot for them and we appreciate that they voted for us.” Besides serving up a great meal, Freedom Square Diner also is heavily involved in working with local charities, including the Cranberry CUP, The Miracle League of Southwestern Pennsylvania—which has its field at Graham Park in …
