Election Central 2011: Allegheny County Row Offices, Court Races

Former state legislator Chelsa Wagner easily wins a first term as county controller; Alexander Bicket and Michael Marmo win seats on the Common Pleas Court bench, according to unofficial results from the Allegheny County Elections Bureau.

All vote totals are unofficial until certified by the Allegheny County Elections Bureau but are based on 100 percent of precincts reporting. Democrat Chelsa Wagner, a state legislator from Brookline, easily defeated Robert Howard of Marshall, drawing nearly twice as many votes to win her first term as Allegheny County Controller. Wagner, a business analyst and attorney, most recently has served as the state representative for the 22nd District in the South Hills. A member of a politically active family, she defeated Howard, a former North Allegheny school director, to win her first term in county office. Wagner won her spot on the general election ballot after defeating primary-election Democratic challengers George Matta, a former clerk …

Election Central 2011: Butler County Race Results

Republican Bill McCarrier and Democrat Jim Eckstein will join incumbent Dale Pinkerton on the Butler County Commission.

Two out of three faces will be new on the Butler County Commission in 2012. With all 89 precincts reporting, incumbent Commission Chairman Dale Pinkerton and William L. McCarrier, a Republican businessman and former commissioner, led the voting Tuesday. They will be joined by Jim Eckstein, who edged out fellow Democratic contender Jerry Johnston for the third seat on the commission. Pinkerton, who gave his victory speech alongside McCarrier Tuesday night, promised to work to ensure Butler County would remain among the nation's areas with the fastest rates of job growth. "We’re excited to have won," he said. "We’re certainly going to do the best we can in the next four years for the taxpayers and the employees of Butler County." McCarrier, …

Dan, Unfortunately, I did not have a good photo of Jim Eckstein from the forum. His eyes were closed in the picture I took of him, which I did not realize until I got to my office. It was not because of any preference or bias toward any candidate and should not be interpreted as such. It was simply my bad camera work. I have added a photo of Mr. Eckstein from his election campaign website. Thanks…   more ›

Election Central 2011: State Court Races

Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge David N. Wecht wins in state Superior Court race.

All results are unofficial until certified by the Pennsylvania Department of State.   With nearly 100 percent of precincts from throughout the state reporting vote counts, Republican Anne E. Covey this morning defeated Democratic challenger Kathryn Boockvar in the race for a seat on Pennsylvania's Commonwealth Court. Covey, of New Hope, Bucks County, is an attorney and the first female member of the Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board. By Wednesday morning, she had 966,441 votes, or 52.4 percent of the votes counted. Boockvar, of Doylestown, Bucks County, is an attorney and arbitrator. By Wednesday morning, she had 879,073 votes, or 47.6 percent of the votes counted by that point.   Kathryn Boockvar       With nearly 100 percent of …

2011 Election Central: Seneca Valley School Board

A few new faces will join the board in 2012.

There were no surprises Tuesday in the race for the Seneca Valley School Board as the winners from May's primary election moved on to victory in the general election. Robert J. Hill Jr., Jim Nickel, Reid Moon and Kelly Kopera were elected to four four-year terms. Two of the contested races were settled in the May primary. The other two races were uncontested. A Cranberry Township resident, Nickel was elected on the Republican and Democratic ballots after cross-filing for Region 2 representing Cranberry Township. Kelly Kopera, a benefits consultant from Evans City, also cross-filed to run and was elected on both party tickets. She defeated incumbent board member Joseph A. Scalamogna for the Region 7 seat in the May primary representing …

No Surprises Here: Skorupan, Mazzoni Re-elected to Cranberry Board of Supervisors

Two incumbents are elected to the board's two open seats.

Incumbent Chairman John Skorupan and Vice Chairman Bruce Mazzoni on Tuesday breezed through an easy re-election to Cranberry Township’s Board of Supervisors, according to unofficial results from the Butler County Elections Bureau. After May’s primary election, the incumbents were the only two candidates left in the running for two open six-year terms on the township’s Board of Supervisors. Skorupan and Mazzoni, who ran a joint campaign, defeated fellow Republicans Terrence Moore and Dave Steed in the spring. That virtually assured their win—barring write-in votes—in the general election because there were no Democrats on the ballot. With all nine Cranberry voting precincts reporting, results from the Elections Bureau show that Mazzoni …

Election Central 2011: Fitzgerald Elected Allegheny County Executive

After defeating Republican D. Raja in Tuesday's election, the Democrat and former county council president looks ahead to priorities once in office

Mass transit, Marcellus Shale, property taxes, the airport and the Allegheny County budget will be on Democrat Rich Fitzgerald’s radar when he takes over as  county executive in January. Fitzgerald, 52, of Squirrel Hill, defeated Republican D. Raja, 46, of Mt. Lebanon, by a nearly 2-1 margin in Tuesday’s general election. The former County Council member and president celebrated the win with hundreds of supporters at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers hall on Pittsburgh’s South Side. Many wore green T-shirts with the words, “Welcome to Fitzburgh” on the front. Afterwards, he talked with Patch about his first priorities when taking office. “We’ve got a lot of challenges, transit, stopping the reassessment of our county only…
