There will be a free drive-thru for people to drop off unwanted items—no questions asked.
Cranberry Township will once again participate in the nationwide Prescription Drug Take-Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27 in the parking lot of the Municipal Center on Rochester Road. The popular drive-thru, drop-off collection program, which was initiated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration several years ago, will be staffed and coordinated by members of Cranberry Township's own police department. It has several goals. First, pharmaceuticals and OTC medications expire, lose potency, and in some cases spoil. Their effects on the patient, as a result, are not what they are supposed to be, a statement from the township said. As a result, drugs should be discarded after their expiration dates to safeguard the health…

Cranberry once again participates in the national Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.
If you’ve got old, unused prescription drugs lying around your medicine cabinet, here’s your chance to dispose of them—safely. As part of the Butler County Prescription Drug Take Back Day, Cranberry Police will host a drug drop off from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 at the station at 2525 Rochester Road. The collection will feature a drop off point that motorists may drive up to in the back parking lot the Cranberry Township Municipal Building. In addition to keeping the medication out of the wrong hands, the drop off also gives area residents a way to rid themselves of the drugs without throwing them away or flushing them down the toilet, both of which are potential safety and health hazards. Sewage treatment plants are not …

Oliver Wynn Herndon faces 11 or more years in prison.
A McMurray doctor, who was accused of illegally prescribing narcotics, pled guilty to health care fraud and all related charges in federal court Tuesday. Oliver Wynn Herndon, 40, of Peters Township, appeared in federal district court before Judge Arthur Schwab. His attorney Roger Cox and Drug Enforcement Administration representatives—including assistant U.S. Attorney Steve Kaufman—were present to relay his summary of offenses. Herndon, a 1996 graduate of Stanford University School of Medicine, and the parties reached a plea agreement. Schwab said the maximum sentence could be up to 30 years in prison, a $1 million fine and mandatory restitution payments. The agreement states he’d have to acknowledge his responsibility to the remaining …

Take your medicine ... to the drop off box in Cranberry Township for Drug Take-Back Day.
Hey! Want some Kit Kat, Uppers, Bounce, Roids, Acid, Ice, Boo or Slam? Too bad; we’re pretty much out of the street drug business here. Cranberry has a different kind of drug problem through—prescription medicines. We’re not alone. According to U.S. authorities, prescription drug abuse is second only to marijuana use by teens in America. Most of the drugs come from the family's home medicine cabinet. When my father-in-law succumbed to heart failure 10 years ago, he left behind a huge volume of the medications doctors had used to try try to keep him alive. Some of them were pretty expensive, and all of them were fresh. I’m sure they would have had real value to other patients with similar heart problems. At least in America, you couldn’t …

Among 65 participating counties in Pennsylvania, Allegheny County ranked first, Washington County, ninth.
Allegheny County is No. 1, according to a statewide tally of prescription drug collection in the most recent national Drug Take-Back initiative. Among 65 participating counties, Allegheny County ranked first, collecting nearly 2,150 pounds; Washington County ranked ninth, collecting 705 pounds. The program is a collaborative effort between the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and state and local law enforcement agencies to rid the country of unwanted prescription drugs and prevent abuse. For many local departments, this was the second collection date since the program began on Sept. 25, 2010. Cranberry Township saw a 100-pound increase the second time around. “We had a pretty significant increase,” Lt. Kevin Meyer said. According to …

The department is participating in the national Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday.
On Saturday, the Cranberry Township Police Department will become a drive-thru, but not like the kind you’re used to seeing at McDonald’s. The department is participating in the nationwide Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, which the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is sponsoring to collect unwanted, unused or expired over-the-counter and prescription drugs. The DEA project aims to prevent pill abuse and theft. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. a police officer and other volunteers will be stationed outside the rear of the township municipal building on Rochester Road with a bin to collect the medications. Lt. Kevin Meyer said residents can drive up and drop off their prescription bottles and tablets in the bin, no questions asked. “They don’t even…

It's efforts like the National Take Back Day that saves lives. Too many kids experiment with pills, and that experimentation can become addiction. Opiate abusers will then turn to heroin. We've lost too many lives in America with this. We need to help our kids stay away from these legal, but harmful drugs of abuse. Teen addicts in treatment tell Myteensavers that they never thoughts their …   more ›
