Windy conditions are blamed for the flames.
We all know that April showers bring May flowers, but the month’s wind gusts bring something else—brush fires. Firefighters from Callery, Adams, Cranberry, Evans City, Middlesex and Wexford did battle with two brush fires that occurred within 30 minutes of each other Monday afternoon in Adams Township. Callery Assistant Chief Craig Huffman said firefighters were called to Brickyard Road near the Brickyard Park Plaza at about 2:45 p.m. Huffman said a wooded area near the Seaton Crest housing plan was burning when volunteers arrived on the scene. The flames were knocked out within 25 minutes, he said. While firefighters were still on the scene they received another call for a brush fire in Adams, this one on Callery Road. Huffman said a …

Crews are called the house on Flamingo Drive after the homeowner notices smoke filling a room.
Cranberry Assistant Fire Company Administrator Mark Nanna credits quick work by firefighters Tuesday for stopping flames from spreading through a Cranberry Township home. “They guys did a tremendous save,” he said. Firefighters were called to Flamingo Drive, a private road located off North Boundary Road near the Marshall Woods neighborhood, at about 1:30 p.m. after the homeowner noticed smoke filling a room, Nanna said. The homeowner, who was the only person in the building when the fire broke out, was able to escape without injury. Nanna said the fire started in a storage area located in the basement of the single-story brick home. Firefighters were able to keep the fire contained to the storage room and a small bedroom located in the …

Don't forget, the public is invited to attend the formal dedication of the 9/11 memorial in front the Park Fire Station on Route 19. Plus, where were you and what were you doing on Sept. 11, 2001? Share your memories in the comment section below.
Most everyone who is old enough can remember where they were and what they were doing when the first of two planes struck the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001. Now they can touch a piece from the day’s wreckage. Just in time for Patriot Day, the 11th anniversary of the attacks, the Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company is holding a formal dedication of its 9/11 Memorial at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Park Station on Route 19. The public is welcome to attend the event, which also will feature the area’s other first responders. The memorial itself is structured around an 832-pound piece of twisted steel that fell from one of the World Trade Center towers on Sept. 11. Two slabs of granite shaped like the Twin Towers …

The flags are a visual marker to help firefighters find the hydrants in case of snowy weather.
Observant drivers around Cranberry may have noticed something different about the township’s fire hydrants—there are flagpoles on them. That’s not all. The spring-loaded poles also are topped with blue-and-white striped flags. “They’re reflective, too,” said Bruce Hezlep, president of the Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company. Hezlep said members of the township’s public works department began adding the flags to the fire hydrants on the township’s main corridors—including Route 228 and Route 19—and cul-de-sacs during the summer months, particularly in August. Paid for by a $15,000 grant from the Office of the State Fire Commissioner, the flags act as visual markers in case snow buries the hydrants. Hezlep recalls that during the …

Firefighters hope a new memorial will help people remember those first responders who gave their lives nearly 11 years ago. A formal dedication will take place Tuesday, Sept. 11 at the Park Fire Station.
After three years in the making, the final pieces of granite for the monument the Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company is erecting in memory of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks has arrived. “It’s all coming together now,” said Jeff Berneburg, chairman of the company’s 9/11 committee, On Wednesday, a large memorial stone that depicts a timeline of the day’s events, including illustrations of the Twin Towers and ill-fated Flight 93, was delivered to the Park Fire Station on Route 19. Berneburg said he personally chose the lifelike designs that were laser cut into the granite to help people remember the lives lost that day, as well as to educate those who weren’t born or were too young to remember the attacks. “I wanted to be able to show …

The one-vehicle crash occurred near mile marker 22 in Cranberry Friday night.
A woman was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh Friday night after a fiery wreck on the Turnpike. The one-vehicle crash occurred near mile marker 22 of the highway's westbound lanes in Cranberry around midnight, according to a Turnpike spokesman. Cranberry firefighters extricated one person from the SUV, which had caught on fire, state police said. Fire chief Brian Kovac said the woman, who was the only person in the vehicle, was not burned by the fire. Bystanders were able to put out most of the flames using fire extinguishers before firefighters arrived on the scene, he said. "We hit a few hot spots that were still going in the car, but she was not affected by the fire," Kovac said of the driver. "It was kept …

Fire chief says lightning hit at least two homes.
At least two homes in Cranberry were struck by lightning during Wednesday night’s heavy storms. Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company members also were called out for a telephone pole fire reported on Franklin Road. “We pretty much had trucks all over the township for a while,” said fire Chief Brian Kovac. Kovac said lightning struck a home on Strawberry Circle at about 8:20 p.m. Less than 15 minutes later, lightning struck a home on Azure Court in the Blueridge Estates neighborhood. Both homes are located off Powell Road. Kovac said neither home caught fire. The home on Azure Courts sustained minor damage when the strike knocked a few bricks from a chimney, he said. “We checked the houses thoroughly inside and out,” he said. As of 10…

The fire company should have the monument complete by Sept. 11 2012.
After a successful day of golf, the Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company is another step closer to erecting a monument in memory of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. On Wednesday, the company held its first ever golf outing at the Cranberry Highlands Golf Course. The cost to golf was $125 per person, or $500 for a foursome, with proceeds benefitting the 9/11 memorial project. Fire company President Bruce Hezlep said the outing—including a $5,000 donation from MSA in Cranberry—raised about $17,000 for the monument, which will be located in front of the Park Fire Station on Route 19. “The support from the community has been just overwhelming,” Hezlep said. About 87 golfers participated in the outing, which followed a shamble format. At …

The facility could be open by late November
Construction is well under way for a new public safety building that will house training and classroom facilities for Cranberry’s firefighters, police officers and EMS workers. The brick facility—which will be located near the township’s public works building off Route 19 —will have two garage bays for fire engines and a training room that can seat about 125. The room also can be divided into two classrooms that seat 40 people each. The building also will feature an emergency generator as well as smart boards and projection screens for the classrooms. Located just a few feet from the Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company’s four-story rescue practice tower, the new facility will give firefighters an opportunity to hold learning …

A golf outing July 11 will raise money for the project.
A little more than a year ago, members of the Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company obtained an 832-pound piece of twisted steel that fell from one of the World Trade Center towers on Sept. 11 2001. Firefighters plan to build a memorial around the I-beam in front of the station on Route 19—but they need your help to do it. Bruce Hezlep, fire company president, said while the company has raised about $30,000 for the memorial, another $12,000 to $15,000 still is needed to complete the project. He hopes to have the memorial built by Sept. 11, 2012. To raise funds, the fire company is holding a golf outing Wednesday, July 11 at the Cranberry Highlands golf course to kick off Cranberry Township Community Days. Hezlep said golfers still are …
