Cranberry Township Historical Society will have a free program at 2 p.m. with a talk about the beloved former North Hills amusement park.
The Cranberry Township Historical Society is hosting a free program about West View Park at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 7, in the council chambers of the Cranberry Township Municipal Center. Tom Steiner, who grew up in West View within the sound of the chain on the Racing Whippet "clinkety-clinking" as it pulled cars up the hill, will share his passion for the park. The land where the once-popular amusement park thrilled area residents has become a shopping center. As most rides require two per seat, please bring a friend. Light refreshments will be served. Despite efforts to the save the building, the cost to restore the decaying school house are deemed impractical.
Although they gave it their best shot, Roy Wagner said members of the Cranberry Historical Society were unable to save the decaying 162-year-old Johnston School House in Cranberry from the wrecking ball. “We don’t want to see the building go down, but we can’t take it on,” he said. Cranberry originally planned to demolish the one-room building, which has fallen into disrepair, in December unless a better solution was found. After a detailed engineering study, as well as discussions with residents and members of the historical society, the township found restoring the schoolhouse was not a practical option, officials said. We lived in West View near the Park and I loved hearing the train whistle and the screams of those on the roller coaster. It was the best and it was sad when the park closed. The end of an era - it was a great old park - lots of memories.   more ›
