Meet the Longs: Cranberry CUP Chooses 2013 'Inspirational' Family

A longtime volunteer and single mother of three, Kim Long was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma last June.

A single mother of three, Kim Long has happily spent time volunteering with numerous organizations around the Cranberry area, including her children’s little league and softball teams. “I’ll volunteer anywhere I’m needed,” she said. Now, after years of giving, Long, 39, has found herself on the receiving end of the community’s help. The Long family, including Ricky, 15, Cody, 13, and Alexis, 11, have been chosen as the beneficiaries of this year’s Cranberry CUP (Community Uniting People), a nonprofit dedicated to helping local families financially—and emotionally. Each summer, the organization holds a golf outing as well as its signature fundraiser, the popular Cranberry CUP softball tournament. Typically held in August, the tournament …

Goodbye Playtime Palace, Hello Cranberry Kids Castle

Plans are in the works to raze the wooden play structure at Cranberry Community Park and replace it with a new, innovative play area.

When Playtime Palace opened in Cranberry's Community Park more than 20 years ago, it was known as the region’s premier playground destination. “It was our signature community asset,” said Cranberry Supervisor Chairman Bruce Mazzoni. Cranberry CUP founder Cathy Cortazzo recalled taking her twins, now age 25, from their home in Economy to Cranberry to play on the community-built palace. “I loved taking them there,” she said. But time and usage have taken its toll on the wooden structure. With maintenance issues that include decaying support posts, splitting wood, sharp edges and insect infestation, the structure has earned the nickname “Splinter Palace” from some users.  The castle-like playground also does not meeting current safety …

I think tearing down the current Castle is ridiculous. That has been there for a long time and there are plenty of wooden structures that are well maintained and easily repaired all over PA. I would really really hate to see such a wonderful play place for children get torn down and made to look plastic and exactly like the North Park structure. I know a lot of people that are really upset...   more ›

Keystone Oaks Students Raise $1,500, Honor Cranberry's Shawn O'Donnell

The nonprofit Cranberry CUP's 2011 "inspirational" person, O'Donnell was a longtime teacher at the high school.

With the memory of two beloved teachers in mind, Keystone Oaks teachers and staff played a charity volleyball game Monday to raise money for a scholarship fund. The game raised more than $1,500 for the David Armitage & Shawn O'Donnell Future Teacher Scholarship Fund. Competition was tough, but friendly. Team O'Donnell won the match in four games: 25-12, 25-9, 23-25 and 25-17. Previously called the Future Teacher Scholarship, the fund was renamed by the Keystone Oaks Education Association to honor the two teachers. Now in its eighth year, the fund has raised more than $12,000 for Keystone Oaks High School graduates who pursue careers in education. A Cranberry resident and a married father of four, O'Donnell—who students nicknamed OD—was a …

Remembering ‘Little Miss Cranberry CUP' Cheyannia Marburger

Diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, Cheyannia, 8, was this year’s inspiration for the Cranberry CUP.

For many who attended the Cranberry CUP softball tournament in August, the sight of Cheyannia Marburger being crowned with a tiara as “Little Miss Cranberry Cup” was the highlight of the day. “Chey really touched the entire CUP community,” said CUP founder Cathy Cortazzo. “I know that the Cranberry CUP community really made that weekend special for her.” Diagnosed last December with an rare inoperable tumor on her brain stem, Cheyannia, of Evans City, died Friday morning. She was 8 years old. Along with her family, Cheyannia was chosen as the beneficiary of this year’s Cranberry CUP (Community Uniting People), a nonprofit dedicated to helping local families. Video: Mutual Inspiration at the Cranberry CUP

This weekend meant a lot for Cheyannia Marburger and family—as well as the crowd of supporters.

At this weekend's Cranberry CUP tournament, neighborhoods and businesses from around the area did way more than just play softball. They also helped support Cheyannia Marburger, an 8-year-old girl with a rare, inoperable brain tumor, and put a smile on the faces of her friends and family. Chey, who her mom describes as “sassy” and “outspoken,” and her family are the beneficiaries of this year’s Cranberry CUP (Community Uniting People), a nonprofit dedicated to helping local families. Each summer, the organization holds a golf outing as well as its signature fundraiser, the popular Cranberry CUP softball tournament. Patch caught up with the Evans City-based family after Saturday's opening ceremony to chat for a bit. Watch the video above to…

Cranberry CUP Cancels Sunday Softball Games

The games are rescheduled for Saturday, Aug. 11 or Saturday Aug. 18.

Sunday’s wet weather has forced the nonprofit Cranberry CUP to cancel all remaining softball games for the day. The games will resume Saturday, Aug. 11 or Saturday Aug. 18. More details on the times and fields will be available soon, according to CUP organizers. Cranberry CUP, which stands for Community Uniting People, raises money to support local families in need. The annual softball tournament—in which different neighborhoods compete against each other to win the coveted Cranberry CUP trophy—is the nonprofit’s signature fundraiser. This year’s beneficiary is 8-year-old Cheyannia Marburger and her family. To learn more about Cheyannia, who was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor last December, click here.

Cranberry CUP Tournament Kicks Off with Cheyannia Marburger

The 8-year-old, who was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in last December, is beneficiary of this year’s fundraiser.

Already a princess within her family, 8-year-old Cheyannia Marburger on Saturday received a crown. After she and her family arrived at Cranberry Community Park on a fire truck for the opening ceremony of the Cranberry CUP softball tournament, Miss Pittsburgh, Stephanie Scarci, placed one of her own rhinestone-encrusted tiaras on the little girl’s head. Cheyannia, of Evans City, also was given a sash that said “Miss Cranberry CUP 2012.” Cheyannia’s mother, Deb Plaisted, had until that point planned to give a speech before the cheering relatives, friends and neighbors gathered to support the family at the opening ceremony, which was hosted by KDKA’s Jeff Verszyla.   But as Scarci placed the tiara on Cheyannia’s head, Plaisted found she was …
