Severe Thunderstorm Possible Wednesday Afternoon in Cranberry Area

The primary threat would be from damaging wind gusts.

There is a small chance that thunderstorms may become severe Wednesday afternoon in the Cranberry area, according to a hazardous outlook issued by the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh. "The primary threat would be from damaging wind gusts, but large hail is also possible," the statement says. Cranberry Man Charged with Embezzling From Local Union

Duane Rill is accused of stealing more than $13,000 while serving as union secretary and treasurer.

A Cranberry Township resident accused of stealing more than $13,000 has been indicted by a federal grand jury, according to the U.S. attorney's office in Pittsburgh.  Duane Rill, 51, of Mary Street, faces one count of union embezzlement. According to the indictment, Rill was the secretary-treasurer of the Berry Metal Employees’ Association, an independent union based in Cranberry, where he is accused of stealing about $13,496 from the union by writing and cashing unauthorized union checks and making unauthorized cash withdrawals. The thefts occurred from March 23, 2007 to Nov. 20, 2009, according to U.S. Attorney David Hickton. If convicted, Rill faces up to five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both.  The Department of Labor, Office …

National Weather Service Issues Freeze Warning for Cranberry Area

Unprotected plants will be damaged.

The Cranberry area and the surrounding region is under a freeze warning from 1 to 8 a.m. Tuesday. The National Weather Service predicts temperatures may dip into the 20s overnight. Meteorologists warn that unprotected outdoor plants will likely be damaged or killed, so cover the plants and bring potted plants indoors. The temperature is expected to rise throughout the week. The high on Wednesday will be around 80 degrees.

UPDATE: Three People Injured When Vehicle Overturns on Pennsylvania Turnpike in Cranberry

Two people are taken by medical helicopters to area hospitals.

Emergency crews responded to a crash involving an overturned car on the Pennsylvania Turnpike Friday morning that injured three people. According to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission spokeswoman Renee Colburn, the crash happened about a mile from the Cranberry interchange. Colburn said three people were in the eastbound car when it overturned at about 10:49 a.m. The Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company reported on the its Facebook page that the car rolled down an embankment. "Crews worked tirelessly to remove all patients from the vehicle," the company's status said. Two people were transported by medical helicopters to area hospitals, Coleburn said. One person was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, she said. The …

U.S. News and World Report's 'Best Schools' List—Does Seneca Valley Rank?

The report includes four Pittsburgh area districts among its top 15 high schools.

Seneca Valley High School is unranked in U.S. News and World Report's annual rankings of America's best high schools released on Tuesday.  The number one high school in Pennsylvania is Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School in Philadelphia. Nearby North Allegheny and Quaker Valley school districts ranked in the top 15.  Schools are evaluated based on overall student performance on state tests, Advanced Placement tests and International Baccalaureate exams; rankings also take into account how well students educate black, Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students, according to a release from U.S. News.  The rankings are designed to capture how well high schools educate all of their students and prepare them for college…

Our family is doing the square foot garden to enjoy some yummy veggies - no driving required. We collect the water from washing veggies for the pots and plants like Mrs. Horvath. State Has Money for Cranberry Police, Ambulance, Jaycees and You

Pennsylvania Treasury's Bureau of Unclaimed Property also lists a large number of Cranberry businesses with money due them—and there might be some out there for you, too.

Each year, the Pennsylvania Treasury receives millions of dollars in unclaimed property, including abandoned bank accounts, forgotten stocks, uncashed checks, certificates of deposit, life insurance policies, safe deposit box contents and recovered stolen property.  Most of this unclaimed property is owed to individual residents (read below to find out how to search for yourself or a relative). However, there are a number of municipalities, school districts, fire and police departments, civic groups and other organizations that also have money waiting for them. Wobble, Wobble! 2013 Unicycle Nationals Coming to Cranberry Area

A Butler County unicycling club is hosting the 2013 North American Unicycling Convention and Championships.

A Butler County-based unicycling club will host the 2013 unicycling championships this summer in the Cranberry area. The Butler Wobble, a collection of unicyclists formed in 2009, won the bid to host the 40th annual North American Unicycling Convention and Championships from July 21 through July 27.  “We’re a small, young club, but it was the enthusiasm and the support of the locals for the various charity runs and other non-professional athletic events in the area that made us stretch beyond our reach and bid on hosting NAUCC in 2013,” Lisa Krack, events director, said in a statement.
