One of the last steel components for the new Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School in Cranberry almost is in place. On Friday, the Diocese of Pittsburgh will hold a “topping out” ceremony at the site along Route 228 as a ceremonial steel beam is hoisted onto the structure. Then it’s back to work. Michael J. Arnold, chief facilities officer for the Diocese, said the project is now entering its seventh month of construction. “For the most part, we’re tracking on schedule,” he said. Expected to open in time for the 2014-15 school year, the 179,000 square-foot private school is located on 71 acres near Cranberry’s border with Seven Fields. PennDOT bridge maintenance work will result in lane restrictions.
Traveling McKnight Road for work or holiday shopping? On Monday, PennDOT contractors began repairing joints on the bridge that carries McKnight Road over Ingomar Road in McCandless. Single-lane traffic will occur on McKnight in both directions from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays through Dec. 21 between Arcadia and Blazier drives. With busy Route 19 as the backdrop, Gov. Tom Corbett joined with a host of officials Monday to cut a ribbon to celebrate the expansion and improvements to the Wexford Flats section of the road in Pine and McCandless. Construction is taking place on West New Castle Street.
Motorists in Zelienople may want to avoid the borough’s railroad tracks. According to PennDOT, a lane restriction will be in place starting at 7 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15 on Route 288 (West New Castle Street) at Market Street to perform work on the railroad tracks and crossing. Traffic will be restricted to a flagger-controlled single lane, PennDOT said. The restriction is expected to be in place until 5 pm. Traffic will flow in alternating directions while the work is being performed. Congestion and delays are likely in the area, according to PennDOT. Drivers are urged to seek alternative routes. PennDOT also reminds motorists to slow down, minimize distractions and to be alert in the work zone.

PennDOT is working hard to finish up several key projects as the road construction season winds down. There are five areas where it will be slow going this weekend. At the top of the list is the inbound Squirrel Hill tunnels which will be closed Friday night through Monday morning. Intermittent, short-term single-lane and shoulder closures also will occur in several locations on I-79 and I-376 (Parkways East and West) from 6 a.m. to noon Saturday, weather permitting, according to PennDOT District 11. PennDOT is working hard to finish up several key construction projects before the weather turns nasty. There are six key projects going on this weekend, including a few which will continue for weeks to come. The one with the biggest impact is the closing of the inbound Squirrel Hill Tunnels Friday night through Monday morning. If your commute takes you through Pearce Mill Road in Pine Township, plan on delays starting this week. Crews from the Pennsylvania Drilling Co. will be conducting geotechnical research for a future slide repair between Route 910 and Brown Road. Short-term single-lane closures on Pearce Mill Road begin Monday, weather permitting, PennDOT District 11 announced. Single-lane alternating-use traffic will occur as needed on Pearce Mill Road from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Oct. 1. A previous slide on Pearce Mill Road—north of Route 910—was repaired in 2011. The latest slide problem is on the portion of Pearce Mill south of Route 910, heading toward North Park. Motorists should use caution and be aware of changing traffic patterns when driving …
