Did Christopher Columbus really discover the "New World" on the second Monday of October? The intrepid explorer is credited with discovering the "New World" on Oct. 12, 1492. But Americans will celebrate Columbus on Oct. 10 this year because, well, that is when the second Monday of the month falls. Declared a federal holiday since 1937, Columbus Day celebrates Columbus' achievements and celebrates Italian-American heritage. Cities across the country will honor the day with parades and festivals, including the big parade -- touted as one of the biggest in the country -- in Pittsburgh's Bloomfield neighborhood. In the Cranberry-area community, it will pretty much be just another day in the neighborhood. Some places will be closed, though. …
