International Delight: St. Ferdinand Holds Annual Ethnic Food Fair

Proceeds from the event will benefit the church's building expansion project.

Area residents tasted flavors from around the world without ever leaving Cranberry Township over the weekend. St. Ferdinand Catholic Church on Rochester Road held its annual Ethnic Food Fair Saturday and Sunday. Valerie Rieder, who organized this year’s festival, said different ministry groups associated with the church each represented a different country at the event. For example, the Mothers Nurturing Mothers group staffed a booth with foods from Italy while The Knights of Columbus sold potato soup at the booth representing Ireland. “It has always been a great event to raise awareness of the different groups in the church,” Rieder said. Ash Wednesday Marks the Beginning of Lent

Christians around the area begin holy season.

Millions of Christians around the world will be marking the beginning of Lent today by observing Ash Wednesday.  Several churches in the Pine-Richland and Cranberry communities will mark the day with Ash Wednesday services. For some religions, that includes the imposition of ashes – when  the foreheads are marked with ashes. “The whole act of marking with ashes is very symbolic,” explained Father Tom Sparacino, pastor of St. Richard Catholic Church in Richland Township. Father Tom, as he is known to his congregation continued, “The ashes are a real mark to remind us of our sins, but also to remind us that we are dust to dust, ashes to ashes.” The ashes are typically made from the palms used in last year's Palm Sunday services and blessed, …

New Home is a Great Discovery for Christian Church

Cranberry's fast-growing Discovery Christian Church finds a new home on 22 acres of property in Adams Township.

When Toney Salva and his wife, Stacie Salva, moved from Boston, MA, to Cranberry Township in 2003 to start Discovery Christian Church, their congregation met on the rear deck of their Cranberry home during the summer months. What a difference seven years makes. Today, Discovery's Sunday services attract more than 500 people to a rented space at the Regional Learning Alliance, a conference center in the Cranberry Woods business park. Prior to that, the church met in an auditorium at what was then Carmike Cinemas (now Cranberry Cinemas) in the township before outgrowing that building.
