Cranberry Officials Keep Original Marcellus Shale Drilling Plan

With the repeal of the Act 13 bill, supervisors were able to reject their previous amendment.

In a unanimous vote, the Cranberry Board of Supervisors rejected the proposed amendment to the township’s current zoning laws for oil and gas companies. The point of the now unneeded amendment was to fit the mold the Gov. Tom Corbett-sponsored Act 13. The Commonwealth Court recently ruled portions of the bill as unconstitutional. Act 13 would have made mandatory statewide regulations regarding zoning for drilling in the Marcellus Shale. All townships and municipalities would have to follow the new rules or be subject to loss of impact fee revenues.    “When Act 13 passed it basically banned local zoning control,” said Supervisor Dick Hadley. According to Hadley, the current ordinance the township has had since 2010 would keep companies …

Honk if You Love Taxes!

Can you hear the sounds of silence?

My enthusiasm for paying taxes is as great as the next fellow’s. Which is to say, very little. Nobody likes paying taxes. If you’re a public official, you probably don’t like imposing them, either. That’s nothing new. Taxes have never been popular—anywhere. The disconnect between taxes and public input on the matter was at the heart of America’s Declaration of Independence more than 200 years ago. At the same time, nobody loves paying insurance premiums, making mortgage payments or paying their cable bills, either. Some of those costs can be whittled down by cutting back on such things as premium channels or increasing insurance deductibles or refinancing home loans. It makes good sense to do all those things.  After those steps have been …

I also hate paying taxes, but not as much as I hate waste. There aren't many people in America right now who haven't had to say "no" to something. No Surprises Here: Skorupan, Mazzoni Re-elected to Cranberry Board of Supervisors

Two incumbents are elected to the board's two open seats.

Skorupan and Mazzoni, who ran a joint campaign, defeated fellow Republicans Terrence Moore and Dave Steed in the spring. That virtually assured their win—barring write-in votes—in the general election because there were no Democrats on the ballot. With all nine Cranberry voting precincts reporting, results from the Elections Bureau show that Mazzoni …
