Hockey Moms and Dads Unite to Support Cranberry's Chiusano Family

The public is welcome to attend a spaghetti dinner to benefit the Chiusano family. A married mom of three children, Deana Chiusano is battling cancer.

Members of the Chiusano family are familiar faces around the North Pittsburgh Youth Hockey Association. Dad Chris Chiusano is a coach in the organization and his wife, Deana, is a regular at the games. The couple’s son, Andrew, 12, plays for the association’s Wildcats, and so does their 8-year-old daughter, Clare. “Chris is just a really good guy who does more for everyone else than himself,” said Chris Krebs, who became close with the Chiusano family when their sons began playing hockey together. “His wife is equally the same.” Knowing that the Chiusanos —who moved to Cranberry from Long Island, NY—don’t have many relatives in the area, Krebs, who comes from a large clan, said his family considers the Chiusanos one of his own. “They’re as…

Spaghetti Dinner Planned to Benefit Cheyannia Marburger

The 7-year-old CVE student was diagnosed in December with an inoperable brain tumor.

Big crowds are expected Saturday for a spaghetti dinner to benefit Connoquenessing Valley Elementary student Cheyannia Marburger. “Several businesses have flyers in their window, and we've been getting responses on Facebook,” said Carrie Mooney, a friend of Cheyannia’s mother. Cheyannia, 7, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in December. Mooney said the little girl hadn’t felt well for weeks before doctors determined she had a tumor on her brain stem. The second-grader is receiving radiation treatments and has not returned to school since her diagnosis. “She’s doing as OK, as well as can be expected,” Mooney said of Cheyannia. Mooney said work friends of Deb Plaisted, Cheyannia’s mother, arranged the spaghetti dinner, which will …

Joan Osborne to Take the Stage for Benefit Concert at The Strand

A portion of the proceeds from the "One of Us" singer's performance tonight will go to the Red Cross of Butler County.

“If God had name, what would it be/And would you call it to his face…” If you can finish the next lyric then you remember Joan Osborne, the curly-haired pop-folk darling who broke onto the music scene in 1995 with her smash hit One of Us. In the time since the ethereal One of Us ruled the radio airwaves, the Grammy-nominated Osborne has mostly flown under the radar, touring with Motown-backing band The Funk Brothers and with the Dixie Chicks. She later appeared in the documentary Standing in the Shadows of Motown. In 2008, Osborne returned to her rock roots with Little Wild One, an album that the same team that gave us One of Us produced. She now is set to release Bring it on Home, which Osborne described on her Web site as a bluesy mix of…

Township, Police Plan Benefits for Recovering Officer

Corporal Dan Hahn is undergoing physical therapy after serious injuries to his neck and back.

It was a little more than a week ago that the family of Corporal Dan Hahn said the officer was in a medically induced coma after serious injuries to his neck and back after a high-speed car chase. Today, not only is Hahn awake, he is talking and undergoing physical therapy at an undisclosed rehabilitation center. “He’s doing much better,” said Jeff Schueler, Cranberry’s public safety director. “He’s been moving forward more than I think anyone thought he would.” At the request of Hahn’s family, Schueler said he could not reveal more about the officer’s condition. He said the police officer is progressing daily. Hahn, 47, was one of many officers from five police departments who pursued Thomas Booth during a high-speed chase  Feb. 14 that …
