Friday marks a very important day. It’s the first home football game of the season for Seneca Valley (Go Raiders!) as well as the district’s annual Veteran Recognition Night. The event begins at 7 p.m at NexTier Stadium on the secondary campus in Jackson Township. Veterans and active military personnel from the community are invited and will be given free tickets to the game with special seating accommodations. They also will be recognized on the track prior to kick-off. The veterans also take time to interact with the Seneca Valley community. Football players, cheerleaders, coaches and other residents typically stop by the district’s tent area (just inside the lower ticket gate) to shake hands and personally thank the local men and women …

Cranberry Patch captures the kids as they arrive for the first day of school. Plus, upload photos of your students here.
Forget opening presents on Christmas Day, for Rowan Elementary principal Dr. John Giancola, nothing beats late August. “This is the most exciting time of the year, the first day of school,” he said. Giancola was at the front doors of the school as buses arrived Tuesday morning to welcome back new and returning students with high fives and handshakes. Unlike last year, he and the staff weren’t wearing aprons. That look was part of the theme for the 2011-12 school year, “Recipe for Success.” This year’s theme is “Lights, Camera, Action.” “It’s a Hollywood atmosphere here,” Giancola joked. Over at Haine Elementary and Middle School, assistant principal Mandy Toy was feeling first day of school jitters. That’s because this is the first year …

Superintendent Dr. Tracy Vitale welcomes school staff by asking them to keep believing in public education—and offers a few other surprises.
Although she promised not to sing, Seneca Valley Superintendent, Dr. Tracy Vitale did quote from the rock band Journey Thursday as she encouraged educators not to stop believing in public education. “Public education needs us,” she said as the opening chords to Don't Stop Believing began to play in the auditorium of Seneca Valley Intermediate High School. “We have been chosen. Chosen to advocate, to stand up and to not stop believing," she said. "So today, I ask you, don’t stop believing.” Vitale’s speech was part of a service rally to welcome staff members, new and veteran, to their first day of the 2012-13 school year. The first day of school for students is Tuesday, Aug. 28. Although the district typically holds an in-service meeting …
