Five Things You Need to Know This Week

The Friends of the Cranberry Library will hold a special Valentine’s book sale Monday, Feb. 11 through Friday, Feb. 15. Buy a decorated bag with three books of your choice, a bookmark and some sweets at the library, located inside the Cranberry Township Municipal Center on Rochester Road. It's a nice gift and all proceeds go to the library! Wednesday, Feb. 12 marks the beginning of the 46-day Lent period leading up to Easter. A number of churches around the Cranberry area will hold Ash Wednesday services. For some religions, this includes the imposition of ashes—which is when the foreheads are marked with ashes.  The ashes are typically made from the palms used at the prior year's Palm Sunday services and blessed. There will be a meeting for parents of students in kindergarten through sixth grade at 7 tonight at the Haine Middle School cafeteria. Ash Wednesday Marks the Beginning of Lent

Christians around the area begin holy season.

Millions of Christians around the world will be marking the beginning of Lent today by observing Ash Wednesday.  Several churches in the Pine-Richland and Cranberry communities will mark the day with Ash Wednesday services. For some religions, that includes the imposition of ashes – when  the foreheads are marked with ashes. “The whole act of marking with ashes is very symbolic,” explained Father Tom Sparacino, pastor of St. Richard Catholic Church in Richland Township.
