Rainy Cranberry Heart Walk a Success

The event benefits the American Heart Association.

The blustery weather Saturday did little to dissuade people from walking in the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk in Cranberry Township. Held at the Westinghouse Electric Co. headquarters on Route 228, the Heart Walk was the first to be held in Cranberry since 2004. Sherri Stitt, vice president at the American Heart Association for the greater Pittsburgh region, said about 350 people attended Saturday’s event. This year’s spokesperson was 7-year-old Luke Ball, who was born with a congenital heart defect and received a heart transplant last year. A student at St. Alphonsus in Wexford, Luke moved with his family from Oregon to Cranberry at age 2 so he could receive treatment at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, said Barbara Roth, …

Heart Walk Returns to Cranberry

The event to benefit the American Heart Association will be Saturday at Westinghouse headquarters.

After a seven-year hiatus, the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk will return to Cranberry Township on Saturday. Barbara Roth, division director for the Heart Association in Butler, Beaver and Armstrong counties, said there typically is one walk per county, but because of Cranberry residents' high demands and the expectations from the nonprofit Cranberry Township Community Chest, she said a second walk in Cranberry was added for Butler County. “We got a lot of requests from the community,” she said. Registration for Saturday's walk in Cranberry will begin at 9 a.m. at the Westinghouse Electric Company headquarters in the Cranberry Woods office park. The walk begin at 10 a.m. A second walk will be Oct. 8 at the Butler County Community …

The kindergartner earned a Mohawk-style haircut after raising more than $500 for the American Heart Association.

Name: Josh Stickle Age: Just turned 7 School: Connoquenessing Valley Elementary Whiz Kid Accomplishment: The kindergartner was the top fundraiser this year at his school. Things started off when he donated $20 of his own money to Jump Rope for Heart, which raises funds for the American Heart Association. So far he has raised $564. Whiz Kid Key to Awesomeness: When Josh asked his mom, Jen Stickle, if he could get a Mohawk-style haircut, she gave him the green light but with two conditions. “I told him he could get one if he used it to raise awareness for the American Heart Association,” she said. “I also encouraged him to donate his own money.” Josh happily handed over $20 and got his Mohawk, but he wasn’t done yet.
