Spotted! The Strand Rolls Out the Red Carpet for Academy Awards

Proceeds from the glam event benefit the nonprofit Strand Theater Initiative.

For years, Beth Traverso has hosted Oscar parties at her home on the night of the Academy Awards for family members, who would dress in their fanciest attire for the occasion.  This year was no different, except the event took place at The Strand. “The Strand has been asking me to do this event for two years. They finally wore me down,” she joked. Traverso was the mastermind behind Sunday’s event at the theater in Zelienople. To celebrate Hollywood’s glitziest night of the year, The Strand held an Oscar party that included broadcasting the show live from the theater’s 25-foot screen. About 100 attendees, dressed in their glitziest gowns and suits, walked the red carpet in front on the theater and enjoyed complimentary appetizers and …

Tom Hulce had a Golden Globe nod for D&E, but no Academy Award nominations that I know of. That would explain it being not on this particular list.   more ›

You Be the Critic: Who Do You Think Should Win an Oscar?

Have you seen any of the movies up for Academy Awards? Check out our recap of the nominees and then tell us who you think should win.

It’s that time of year again, and by that we mean nominations have been made for Hollywood’s own Super Bowl—the Academy Awards.  This year’s nominees, announced Thursday morning by funnyman Seth MacFarlane and actress Emma Stone, include Lincoln, which had the most nominations at 12, and Les Miserables, which has nine nominations. Surprisingly, there was no best director nod for Ben Affleck for his critically acclaimed film Argo, which is nominated for seven awards, including Best Picture. The movie will compete alongside Amour, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty in that category. Similar directing shutouts occurred for other highly-praised …

Attendees are invited to don eveningwear or dress up as their favorite star.

The Cranberry Public Library rolled out the red carpet Thursday in honor of tonight’s 84th annual Academy Awards. Attendees came to the event in their eveningwear or dressed as a celebrity. Library director Leslie Pallotta switched gears to act as a movie director while Pat DiFiore, librarian for adult services, filled in as the evening’s host. Even paparazzi attended the event. Patch Poll: Cast Your Vote for Best Picture in Sunday's Oscar Race

The Academy Awards are Sunday. What movie do you think should take home the big prize?

Brad, Angelina and George (as in Clooney) are some of the big-name stars set to walk the red carpet Sunday for the 84th annual Academy Awards. Although we won’t be there in person (maybe our Patch ticket got last in the mail?), we’ll be watching the actors—and silently judging their fashion choices—from the comfort of our own homes. Just because our readers aren’t the Hollywood insiders in charge of choosing this year’s winners (at least, we don’t think), that doesn’t mean your opinions don’t count. Of the films up for Best Picture, we want to know which ones you enjoyed the most. The nominated films are: The Artist, The Descendants, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, The Help, Hugo, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball, The Tree of Life and War …
