The station has two engines, one ladder, one rescue and one squad It also operates a command vehicle. The department currently has 42 members, but it always is looking for more volunteers.
The station also has a junior firefighter program for teenage boys and girls that will help them become firefighters and medical responders in the future. The teens actively participate in operational and administrative activities that do not threaten their safety.
The department also has an auxiliary team to assist in social functions and provide support during emergencies.

The town was named for Zelie, the eldest daughter of the town's founder, Baron Dettmar Basse, who came to the area in 1802 from Frankfurt, Germany. Basse built his own private residence and then proceeded to lay out the village.
The borough offices are located on West New Castle Street in the same historic building that is home to the police department and also council chambers. The manager is Don Pepe, who oversees all borough departments and services excluding the police department and the fire department. Zelienople has more than 20 employees working for the borough.
The borough, which is home to the Strand Theater, also hosts the Horse Trading Days arts and music festival.
