James L. "Jimmy the Barber" Martin III

Martin was a lifetime member of H.O.G. (Harley Owners Group).

James L. "Jimmy the Barber" Martin III, 68, of Cranberry, formerly of West View, died Sunday, May 6, 2012. Born in York, PA Jan. 13, 1944, he was the son of the late James L. and Lucy (Kinard) Martin. He was the husband of Kathleen McGowan Martin; father of Craig A. (Pam) Martin of IL; brother of Bonnie Cuppett-Weigard of York, PA and Mildred (Steve) Wilson of Lebanon, PA; grandfather of Devin & Alyssa Martin. He is also survived by nieces and nephews and his loving kitty, Maggie. Community Prepares to Say Goodbye to Longtime Harmony Firefighter Doug Pickett

A former assistant fire chief, Pickett joined the Harmony Volunteer Fire Company more than 20 years ago.

Members of the Harmony Volunteer Fire Company are saying goodbye to a longtime firefighter today. Douglas A. Pickett Jr., a former assistant chief who was with the company for more than two decades, unexpectedly died on Saturday. He was 46. “He was a good man,” said Rodney Kniess, financial secretary at the Harmony fire company. “He was very devoted to his family.” Married to Sue Pickett and a father to two sons, Pickett, of Harmony, joined the fire company on May 20, 1991. He was a carpenter with the Local #922 Carpenters Union and was serving as the union’s vice-president when he died, according to his obituary from the Boylan Funeral Home in Zelienople. Peter J. Klein, Jr., 93, born Jan. 20, 1919 to Theresa and Peter Klein Sr, died Feb. 14, 2012. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy Makowski Klein (2007). Klein was the last surviving member of the the well known sandlot baseball city league championship team from the South Side that was comprised of the nine Klein brothers and coached by their father during the 1930s. He was a former employee of the Brunning Company and completed his career as vice president of the engineering division at FL Haus Co. Klein was a member of St. Teresa of Avila church for more than 50 years and a member of the Knights of Columbus #3907. Jeffrey Zaslow, Author with CMU Ties, Dies in Auto Accident

The 53-year-old Wall Street Journal columnist and best-selling co-author of "The Last Lecture" is killed Friday in northern Michigan.

Best-selling author Jeffrey Zaslow, 53, who co-wrote The Last Lecture with Carnegie Mellon University's Randy Pausch, died Friday in an auto accident in northern Michigan. According to the Antrim County Sheriff's Office, a vehicle lost control on the M-32 road and skidded into the path of a truck Friday morning; the car's driver was killed, a dispatcher confirmed. Zaslow recently published a new novel, The Magic Room, and was a featured speaker last month at the West Bloomfield Optimist Club breakfast meeting and a frequent speaker at functions throughout West Bloomfield and Farmington. Family says Jimmy Slack was smart, compassionate and, at times, silly.

The family of Jimmy Slack gathered in their Bridgeville home Tuesday night a day after his body had been found and told stories, wept, shared a few laughs and flipped through old photos of him. “It’s just hard to sort through everything,” said Maureen Shields while looking at the numerous photos of her brother. “We’re going through pictures to make a picture board. It’s just really hard to go through pictures of someone’s entire life and at 25, that’s his entire life.” Pittsburgh police found Slack’s body in the Ohio River nearly two months after he disappeared while attending a concert in Pittsburgh. Seneca Valley Remembers School Photographer Ray Thompson

District officials credit award-winning photographer with taking thousands of photos over 30 years.

At Monday’s school board meeting, Seneca Valley officials took a moment to remember longtime school photographer Ray Thompson. A fixture at Seneca Valley, including at numerous sporting events, Thompson, of Harmony, died from cancer on Jan. 11. He was 75. Thompson was married, the father of five children and grandfather of two young children. He also took photos for various newspapers, including the Butler Eagle, News Weekly, the Cranberry Journal and the defunct Pittsburgh Press. According to his obituary on the Boylan Funeral Home website, Thompson won 30 Keystone Press and Golden Quill awards for photography throughout his career. School board president Robert Hill said Thompson worked with the district for about 30 years and was …

Cranberry CUP Beneficiary Shawn O'Donnell Succumbs to Cancer

A married father of four young children, O'Donnell was diagnosed with cancer last spring.

After battling inoperable liver and colon cancer since last May, Cranberry resident Shawn O’Donnell died Tuesday afternoon. He was 43. A married father of four who was a longtime social studies teacher at Keystone Oaks High School, O’Donnell and his family were the beneficiaries of this year’s Cranberry CUP (Community Uniting People), a nonprofit dedicated to helping local families. O’Donnell was present as his Pinehurst neighborhood took the CUP’s trophy during the nonprofit’s annual August softball tournament. The fundraiser features different neighborhoods and local businesses competing against each other. Viewing, Celebration of Life for Carmen Rizzi is Today, Tuesday

The 18-year-old was killed in an ATV accident last week.

Viewing will be held today for the 2011 Seneca Valley graduate killed last week in an accident involving an all-terrain vehicle in Montana. Carmen Rizzi, 18, died while she was accompanying her family on a Make-A-Wish trip to Glacier National Park for her brother Dominic, who has epilepsy. Viewing will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Boylan Funeral Home Inc. on East Grandview Avenue in Zelienople. A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Gregory Church in Zelienople. Russell W. Smith, 77, of Masonic Village of Sewickley, formerly of Franklin Park, died Monday, July 25, 2011. Born in Apollo, PA May 27, 1934, he was the son of the late John T. and Virginia (Johnston) Smith. He was preceded in death by his first wife Marian (Datt) Smith and second wife Eleanor (Riffe) Smith. He is the father of Stephen R. Smith of Cranberry Township, PA and Wendy M. Smith of Champaign, IL; brother of Lois Hilty of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; brother-in-law of Douglas (Karen) Datt of Valencia and Darrel Datt of Prospect and best friend and loving companion of Edie Keeney.
