Ready, Set, Play! Zelie Park Welcomes New Playground

Money is still being raised for the Zelienople Memorial Skate Park.

When the weather warms up again, area residents will be able to celebrate the sunshine with a new playground at the Zelienople Community Park.

The playground set was erected last week. The Zelienople-Harmony Rotary Club donated $20,000 for the project, said Alicia Flood, treasurer for the Friends of the Zelienople Park, a nonprofit dedicated to enhancing Community Park in Zelienople.

Flood said the borough of and the Friends of the Park also gave $27,000 for the playground.

The set is geared for those between the ages of 5 and 12. No one older than 12 is allowed on the equipment. A second play set for those between the ages of 2 and 5 also will added to the park. Flood said equipment for that playground would arrive by mid-May.

More park improvements are on the way.

The parking lot will be paved this summer and an amphitheater for the park should be finished by fall, according to the Friends of the Park.

Money also still is being raised for the Zelienople Memorial Skate Park, which will honor the memory of honorary Zelienople firefighter

All three teens, who were students, drowned two years ago after the sport utility vehicle in which they were riding went out of control and rolled upside down into a icy pond near the Zelienople-Harmony Sportsmen’s club.
