Cranberry Kids Castle Playground Gets an Opening Date

More volunteers are needed to build the "Today" section of the playground.

The dedication for the playground, which replaces the wooden Playtime Palace, is set for Sept. 26.

The exact time and agenda for the celebration will be announced in August, once the “Today” section of the playground is built.

The Today section, which includes a clock tower and a variety of slides, will be built by community volunteers July 31 through Aug. 4.

While the first shift for July 31 is full, volunteers are still needed for the 4 to 8 p.m. shifts on the remaining days.

Cranberry Supervisor Chairman Bruce Mazzoni, who also is treasurer of the nonprofit Cranberry Township Community Chest, noted the Today portion of the playground is being built over the same weekend at the popular Cranberry CUP neighborhood softball tournament.

The Cranberry CUP also is a sponsor of the new playground.

Because of the timing of the CUP, many potential playground volunteers are tied up with the tournament, Mazzoni said.

“Thus we are renewing our effort to encourage residents to sign up,” Mazzoni said in a press release. “It could not be easier to do so either on the township or CTCC web site.”

Play by Design is managing the construction on the Kids Castle, which is based on drawings from more than 3,500 local students.

Play by Design also designed and helped coordinate the community build out for the Playtime Palace more than 20 years ago, Mazzoni said.

“Over 900 people came out to help build that playground,” he said. “This section of the playground is a custom one-of-a-kind design and will be stick built.“

Mazzoni said there would be six captains at the build out to coordinate the volunteer efforts.

Another 200 people are still needed to sign up for one shift of work. Each shift lasts 4.5 hours. Volunteers also are welcome to sign up for more than one shift.

“We welcome businesses, neighborhoods and civic/nonprofit/churches to sign up and be part of a special event that will stay with you for decades,” Mazzoni said.
