Sweetest Day, October 20!

Sugar and spice and everything nice in one stop!

Yes, there is sugar and spice and everything nice that's available in Evans City.  Just park in one space and it's all right there!

On Oct 8, 1921 a group of commercial interested persons decided to come up with a holiday and call it Sweetest Day. This was a group of folks from the Cleveland area. Sweetest Day is celebrated every year on the third Saturday of October.

Thinking that this was just another reason for Hallmark to sell greeting cards, the residents of Cleveland po-pooed it, but Hallmark had nothing to do with this back then.

For the sugar you might be looking for on Sweetest Day, you could start out at the Tin Man Sweet and Bake Shop. The are just new in town and are enjoying meeting the residents of Evans City.

The bakery is owned and operated by Maria and Justin Wrobelewski and everything is made on the premises. They have been a very nice added attraction to the Main Street area. This is Maria and Justin's first attempt at having their own business—and they are doing well.

If you haven't had enough of a sugar fix, go next door beside the TinMan and visit the Wendereusz Candy and More store. This is a second generation candy store, which opened in the Spring of 2012.

Even just passing through the doors your body absorbs the calories! Peggy and Larry Wendereusz Sr. have been in the candy business for 20 years. When the time was right for them to think about retiring from it, Larry Jr. and his wife, Tricia (Morgan) decided it would be a great venture for them to take over.

It's a family-owned-and-operated business with Tricia's parents (Kathy and Richard Morgan) and Larry Jr.'s parents (Larry Sr. and Peggy) helping out. There are other family member that help when available.

The candy store has novelty candies, those rare candies you can't just find anywhere, all flavors of Jelly Belly Beans and also bulk candies in various flavors.  The offer white chocolate, milk chocolate and, my favorite, dark chocolate. Right now, for the fall season, they have a pumpkin-flavored bark that is very good!

If it's spice that you need to enhance your lives, go right across the street to the Con Yeager Spice Co. The Con Yeager Spice Co. was started in Pittsburgh in March 1926. It has moved to various locations throughout the years. In 1983, they moved the facilities to Magill Road in Zelienople and in 2012 they opened their store on Main Street in Evans City.

They have closed the store area on Magill Road and just use that building for manufacturing and blending spices. Bill Kreuer, the present owner/operator might be called Mr. Spice of Life.

There's just about every spice you would ever need in this store. Spices for wild game, to baking, to rubs for different types of meat. Want to make your hot sausage nice and tangy? his is the place to go for the spices.

You will find a very friendly Michelle Burr in the spice store to help you with all your needs.

Come on down to Evans City and see just what these three businesses have to offer you for Sweetest Day. You'll find warm and friendly people working in all of the stores.
