Three SV Students to Play in National Lacrosse Classic

The sophomores have been named 2011 High School Underclassmen All-Americans.

Developing new talent has been a key element in the success of the boys lacrosse team, which went all the way to the semifinals of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association championships last season.

The future of Raiders lacrosse appears bright after three sophomores were selected to play in the 2011 National Lacrosse Classic.

Seneca Valley Intermediate School students Wendell Frank, Cole Fyock and Dan Peterson were chosen to play in the event, which brings together the top 500 high school underclassmen lacrosse players in the country to one tournament venue.

The classic will be held in Germantown, Md., on July 5-8. The players will be divided into 20 regional teams that will compete to become the USA Champion and earn the chance to compete against Canada for an International Championship.

“Playing against national competition will help us get better and develop our stick handling skills,” Frank said. “It’s also a great opportunity to meet a lot of college coaches.”

In lacrosse, players attack and defend the net while running with a 30-inch long stick with a mesh pocket on the end. Depending on the position, some players use longer sticks.

“The hardest part of lacrosse is developing your stick skills,” Frank said. “You have to pass, catch and shoot with the stick, and that makes lacrosse totally different from every other sport.”

Lacrosse also is a fast-paced sport that requires conditioning and quickness.

“Lacrosse is a lot like hockey,” Frank said. “There’s a lot of speed involved with it.”

Wendell Frank is the son of Bill and Karen Frank, Cole Fyock is the son of Jeff and Bina Fyock, and Dan Peterson is the son of Fred and Cece Peterson.

The three Seneca Valley sophomores were selected from more than 100 players from the region who competed for 22 positions. They will help represent the Ohio Region.

The Seneca Valley varsity lacrosse team also played in the semifinals of the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League lacrosse championships last season.
