Seneca Valley Student Wins National Competition for Chemists

Andrew Lingenfelter gets $5,000 scholarship.

A Seneca Valley student came out on top as the national winner in the Chemical Education Foundation’s 2011 "You Be The Chemist" challenge June 20 in Philadelphia.

Andrew Lingenfelter, a freshman at , won the title of National Challenge Champion. A $5,000 scholarship was among the various prizes he won.

During the competition, students from around the country battled through seven rounds of tough questioning on important chemistry concepts, scientific discoveries, and historical figures in chemistry.

Andrew represented Pennsylvania after winning the state challenge earlier this spring. In the last three years, he also has won the local challenges sponsored by BASF, The Chemical Company. Last year, he was a state finalist. 

The event, which was held at the National Constitution Center, was attended by roughly 150 members of the chemical industry, educators, and the participants' family members.
