Jason Daily, Cranberry's director of public works, said crews began salting the township's roads at 11 p.m. on Thursday in anticipation of the rain turning into snow.

"We felt it was necessary to have guys out overnight to avoid an icing situation," he said.

Crews didn't encounter any troubles Friday morning, he said, noting that most of today's snow showers held off until after morning rush-hour traffic.

He said road workers would continue to salt the roads through the evening.

"Every route is being covered even now," he said. "We're holding a few guys into rush hour."

A winter weather advisory for snow and blowing snow means visibility will be limited due to a combination of falling and blowing snow.

PennDOT also is urging motorists to be prepared for snow squalls and high winds throughout the day. Drivers who encounter drifting snow, isolated snow-covered roadways or debris can call 1-800-FIX-ROAD to report the location.

Drivers are advised to use caution when traveling, especially in open areas or elevated areas like bridges and ramps.
