Seneca Valley Loses, Replaces Board Member in One Night

School officials appoint Reid Moon to the seat representing Zelienople after Dr. Sally A. Hanley resigns.

In a quick turnaround, Seneca Valley School Board members lost one official and appointed her replacement in one evening.

At Monday’s workshop meeting, board members accepted the resignation of Dr. Sally A. Hanley, whose Region 6 seat represents Zelienople. Hanley did not attend Monday’s meeting, but school board President Robert Hill read aloud the letter of resignation she sent to district officials on May 23.

The resignation is effective immediately. In her letter, Hanley, whose first term on the board would have ended in December, thanked officials for the time she spent in service to the district.

“It is my hope that Seneca Valley continues to thrive,” she wrote in her letter.

Linda Andreassi, the district’s director of communications, said Hanley resigned because she is moving from the district. She did not know if Hanley already has left her home in Zelienople.

Hill said Haney often was a voice of reason on the board and would be missed.

“This is a huge loss,” he said.

Although the board had 30 days to appoint a replacement to serve out the remainder of Hanley's term, members unanimously voted to add Reid Moon, who would have taken over the seat next year, after accepting Hanley’s resignation.

A pastor with the Church of Christ in Zelienople and a longtime Seneca Valley school bus driver, Moon staged during the May primary to win the Region 6 seat after learning no candidates were on the ballot. Hanley choose not to seek re-election.

“I think the voters already have decided who they want to fill Dr. Hanley’s seat,” Hill said.

Moon, who attended Monday’s meeting, was not surprised by his appointment. He said Hill called him last week to let him know of Hanley’s impending resignation.

He added he had no reservations joining the board six months earlier than planned.

“In my profession, having a calling is extremely important,” he said. “I do feel I was called to do this.”

Seneca Valley Solicitor Matt Hoffman said Moon must be sworn in by a magistrate before joining the board. He may be in place by the district’s next meeting on June 20.

“I’m excited about it,” Moon said. ‘This is the next adventure.”
