Seneca Valley Ice Hockey Team Takes on Rival North Allegheny in Tonight's Outdoor Charity Match

Proceeds from the game at North Park will benefit the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.

The Seneca Valley varsity ice hockey team will slap sticks with the rival North Allegheny Tigers tonight for a good cause.

Organized as part of UPMC and the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League’s High School Hockey Outdoor Charity Series, proceeds from the 8 p.m. outdoor matchup at North Park will benefit the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.

Chris Chiusano, director of public relations for the team, said players are eager for the game, which might be the only outdoor matchup they participate in during the season.

“It’s unusual these days to actually play outdoors, so that in itself is a pretty  unique experience for the players,” he said. “In addition, it’s for a really good cause.”

Chiusano said he expects players to sport pink tape on their sticks, shin guards and socks to show their support for breast cancer research.

“They’re into it,” he said.

Pre-sale tickets are $5. Tickets purchased at the game will be $7. Pre-sale T-shirts—which Chiusano said come in pink and white and feature the UPMC and PIHL logos—are $12. They'll be $15 at the game. Pre-sale combo (ticket/T-shirt) prices are $15. The combo will be $20 at the game.

There will be a raffle with numerous prizes with the winners announced during the game. Chiusano said prizes include tickets to see a Pittsburgh Penguins game, a golf package and more.

Players younger than 8 from the North Pittsburgh Youth Hockey Association’s American Development Model will play in a cross-ice exhibition before the game.

U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire, State Rep. Mike Turzai and State Sen. Jane Orie are expected to attend the event. According to Altmire’s office, the congressman will drop the puck at the matchup.

Although weather forecasters are Chiusano said a few flakes shouldn't be enough to disrupt the game.

“Typically, as long as it’s not snowing heavily, you can still play on an outdoor rink,” he said. “As long as it’s not raining, it won’t be a problem.”

The Seneca Valley varsity ice hockey team competes in the Southwest Conference Section 2 Class AAA of the PIHL. The team has a 1-10 record in the league so far for the season.
